by Stephen Roxborough

one day we will wake up!
one day we will wake up!
one day we will wake up!

blare america!

free her terrible arch earth eaters
blam the tar fuel hummer realm
chime the bible tilt ice flame
mate her bull belt lute rattle
bluff her male threat circle
tame the blame teacher
cheat the rat flea father
beat the careful lie maker
bare her mumble leer
ream her beautiful fire tube
america here america now
alert the faithful!

one day we will wake up!

i watch deal or no deal because
i love to see america get high
on winning tons of money only to end up
making themselves sick
when greed overtakes them to open
one pandora's case too many

i watch deal or no deal
because i can't take my greedy eyes off
those barbie dolls with legs to their cheekbones
tight bulimic waists and dozens of implants
busting out of lowcut dresses
illuminating my every highschool fantasy

i watch deal or no deal
because i wanna knock knuckles with howie
and butt heads with the banker
and fake argue with my support group
while basking in the pseudo glory of a studio audience
advising me on my faux financial future

i watch deal or no deal
because it doesn't threaten war or terror
inflation or addiction cancer or religion
bird flu child suicide or global warming
yet it delivers shallow escape
from deep sleep troubles so near

one day we will wake up!

america the beautiful
i want my nukes over easy
smothered in sautéed mushroom clouds
with twelve stacks of dry skyscraper toast
strip malls au flayed rare flesh
heartlessly garnished
by splatters of bloody tabasco
washed down with the chill
of nuclear winter ice coffee
breakfast of champions
all options on the table
bomb appetit!

one day we will wake up!

fire swerves around her curves
and carves a deep impression

fine arc of flame hot thrust of hip
his portal to burning obsession

she smolders round his earthy ground
devil angel and conqueress

to kiss the embers of her glow
fire eating men have died for less

one day we will wake up!

congress shall make no law respecting
whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer
an establishment of religion or prohibiting
the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
or abridging the freedom of speech or
to take arms against a sea of troubles

one day we will wake up!

fresh earthquakes shaken here
mix or match wall of tsunami accessories
bushels of tornados guaranteed to turn heads
spring thaws will flood the market
sorry lightning storms on strike
vintage year for hurricanes
price war on melting ice caps
fire sale on forest green blazers
heat waves are hot this summer

one day we will wake up!

america the beautiful
our landfill provides thousands of acres
of wildlife habitat
our landfill provides thousands of acres
of wildlife habitat
celebrate the future hum!
cram the free flute refill truth tumbler
beat the immature bell america!

one day we will wake up!

america your love comes to me
like a leg cramp in the night

you paralyze me she said

instead of release and afterglow
you give me the boa hug of death
you give me black widow revenge
you give me mantis lover hunger

when i wake up she said
i know i must swallow this pain
and move you through my system

one day we will wake up!

fox logic tells us the problems of america
are not american problems

one day we will wake up!

more death penalty more pro life
even when we're wrong we're right
father son and holy cattle prod
a vote for us is a vote for god

jesus christ knows the score
love is all you need in war
because we're christians for killin
we're christians for killin

join our crusade to holy lands
make some terror and get a tan
we're fat cats for tax cuts
and thinnin the population man

we don't need poor or meek
countin votes or turnin cheek
because we're christians for killin
we're christians for killin

we're number one with a bullet man
the pope of the pentagon has the plan
and no one can stop us
when the good lord's willin
because we're christians for killin
we're christians for killin

one day we will wake up!

the new world of warcraft implant
was a small price to pay for the convenience
of anywhere anytime play
she discovered it improved her REM state
and multi-tasking skills
gave her confidence and calm
enabled her to attain
higher levels of enchantment

one day we will wake up!

each milliliter of seawater
contains a million bacteria
and ten million viruses
teeming with tens of thousands
of new species
in every bucketful of brine

each simple dip in the ocean
is a bold expedition
into unseen unknown miracle
mini microsystems
concealed by perception
invisible bathers

one day we will wake up!

oh lord save me from the eternal lay-away plan
deliver me from dead cow flesh
mediocre pizza
sports on TV
microwave lasagna
push button war
and weak national beer
give me the vision to see through the surface
of anything
grant me longer days
and shorter hours
oh lord please deliver me from myself

one day we will wake up!

the rewards for serving the machine
of production are shiny devices
that celebrate the technology and culture
of production
to improve the efficiency of the individual
in serving the machine

one day we will wake up!

mute the tree tall leech battle
feel her ethical bull hammer
celebrate fat at the barbie altar
futile tutu tiff barf babe
ram her rare blue flirt meat
america the beautiful

one day we will wake up!

you could get the job you deserve
you could deserve the job you get
you deserve to get jobbed

you could increase your income
you could in crease your outcome
you could come in your crease

you could become a leader
you could lead a becomer
you could become lost

one day we will wake up!

when i grow up daddy
i wanna spread freedom with war
i wanna liquidate the poor
i wanna liberate all the suckers who disagree
plant bombs in their backyards
watch democracy grow
i wanna green zone that's brown and explodes
i wanna be a five star general hero
broadcast my own TV show
educate by teaching hate
fight terror with better terror
i wanna keep america safe from thinking
i wanna control the internet
i wanna puppet for a president
stamp my face on your letters
print my own money
be a wolfowitz in sheep's clothing
i wanna be all that i can be
i wanna screw lady liberty
feed on greed and fear
i wanna be seen with movie stars
i wanna bunker that can't be busted
go to church and pray to mars
i wanna drive a big bulletproof american car
when i grow up daddy daddy mommy
i wanna be the one they call the war czar

one day we will wake up!

Most analysts were surprised at the price cut's timing and size. "We would have figured $50 by Christmas and $100 by next spring,"

Brilliant analysts. Did they ever notice how much money Sony's losing on this pile of over-heating shit?

I'll buy one when the $500 system is on sale during Christmas, but only if LittleBigPlanet is out by then.

If poetry isn't already dead, I wish it would do itself in as a kind of mercy killing after that monstrosity.

Jesus...

My finger cramped scrolling through that.

That poem should be even longer.

That long, dull poem is exactly why I hate poetry.

that's exactly why bloggers often use the "coninue reading..." jumps/links/walls/whatever you call them. be wary of cut-and-paste, you might not know what you're getting yourself into.

That poet deserves a witchcraft-induced face vagina.

Ahh, much better. You've now obtained my approval. Continue.

They said on TV that at roughly the same time Sony will be releasing a PS3 with a slightly bigger hard drive for $600.

I must be one of the lucky few who haven't had a single problem with my XBOX 360.

@9 you're part of the silent majority. Of the 25 360's in my Xbox Live circle only 1 has failed.

That poem
is ridiculous
I want
to stab its eyes out.

Can I be a poet now too?

But but but poetry will end the WAR!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Giffy | July 9, 2007 9:14 AM

This confirms it: poetry is for writers who want to avoid trivial things like "grammar" and "syntax" and "understanding". You wonder why most poets die alone and penniless...

you know, i'm a big twat and actually like poetry, but holy god, that thing is a hideous waste of, uh, words?

Now I want to see a haiku-off between Stranger writers on Slog. The dirtier, the better.
