Clearly it is a phallic nosed rabbit that is making rice-cake on the moon:

This should give you an insight as to how utterly foreign the Japanese mindset is.

Kinaidos @1, What I think you're seeing as a phallic nose is actually the rabbit's left ear. The rabbit is looking down at the mochi it's making.

Where did crows come from?

Reminds me of a Shakespeare quote:

Do you see yonder cloud that's almost in shape of a camel? By th' mass and 'tis, like a camel indeed. Methinks it is like a weasel. It is backed like a weasel. Or like a whale. Very like a whale.

Are we sure the full moon itself isn't supposed to represent the rice cake and the inky black sky the crows?

The moon represents one of my balls.

@2, or not. Five people from the same neighborhood can see five different things in the exact same cloud. Perhaps they are all utterly foreign and unrelatable to each other too.

I believe it is because we look at the light area while the Japanese may see more in the dark area. Yin and Yang have strengths in both dark and light, while Christianity holds only faith in the light. Walk into the light, go to the light. No one says Walk into the dark. You might bonk your head on something.

You know, when I was a kid I saw the Man in the Moon clearly, but now that I'm an adult I have trouble picking out anything more than an interesting but random arrangement of blotches. I wonder what that says about me?

There was a full moon? I didn't notice. I was wondering why I was having so much sex though.

I think that upper white stripey thinger is supposed to be crow #1, the white stripe on the left is crow #2, and the white dot with the white lines radiating from it between them is the rice cake.

What I see when I look up at the moon is a whacking great rock covered in craters. It's glorious!

Fuck! I don't see a man in the moon, nor do I see any crows. What the hell is wrong with me? OR, maybe Avallibam @13 has it right...

At the risk of double commenting, I say Fuck! I don't see a man in the moon ,nor do I see any crows. Maybe Avaallibam @ 13 is right.
