There were 123 contenders for the glory. This year's winner "shares Hemingway's fondness for Key West, cats and having a good time, though he has never attempted any writing--except insurance policies." His favorite book of Hemingway's is The Old Man and the Sea. (Wrong answer!) Plus, does he look a little chipper to you? A little too Christmas-y? Those cheeks? All I'm saying is, this guy was robbed:...

Does he get and Abercrombie and Fitch double barrel shotgun as part of the price package, and maybe an electroshock package thrown it to boot? That would explain how this could be an annual contest.

Comment by Cato the Younger Younger

Ah... Hemmingway and the glorification of war. Such a fitting author in this glorious new age of American Imperialism and Fascist Bliss!

Didn't Chris cover this same thing last year though? It sounds really familiar.

The Spanish civil war was a war against Fascism. For whom the bell tolls clearly takes the side of the Spanish Republicans( Anarchists Communists)and some of the internationalists that fought there, including the old left americans who fought for the Abe Lincoln Brigade. It is, to be brief, not a glorification of war, but a novel about the necessary struggle against Franco's Fascists. Nowhere does it glorify imperialism.

Have you actually read Hemmingway?

@5 Read that and his other works. There is nothing glamorous about war and Hemmingway certianly does a great job at making war glamorous.

@Cato

Let's see...In For Whom the Bell Tolls their comrade turns on them and the main character dies. In A Farewell to Arms infantry are shot willy-nilly to spare the officer's the disgrace of defeat. In The Sun Also Rises Jake Barnes is impotent because of war wounds. You have an odd idea of glory.
