I understand how you feel, but if you want to check "married" on your federal tax return, you'd better be prepared for a very long wait since most Americans are openly hostile towards marriage equality. The GOP (Greed-Oil-Pollution plus hate and lies for free) has built a cottage industry around anti-marriage equality hysteria.

The Report Card on Prejudice in America was just released today by Zogby International and the results are pretty ugly.

Overall, 62% of Americans oppose marriage equality, and the section on racism is a real frakking bummer. We have to understand that we're living in a right-wing country and our fellow citizens range from ambivalent to hostile towards us and our needs. When we have a chance to secure protections for ourselves like with the new law, we need to take it.

We're not Canada, and most Americans are not decent people who will do the right thing. Read some of those racism stats and shudder, for example: "While 67% of respondents claimed to have no preference themselves between a white, black or Arab clerk in a convenience store, 71% said, “most Americans” would seek out the white clerk."

The pollsters ask people what "most Americans" would do because people reveal their true feelings when talking about others. Ugh.
