Can't we just get them driver's licenses? I mean, wouldn't that be simple enough?

Yeah, Oregon allows all immigrants to get driver's licenses. Not very many states allow that.

But it's probably going to end soon. The new Real ID act passed by Congress says states must require proof of legal residence (among other requirements) if they want their licenses to valid for things like boarding airplanes and visiting federal office buildings.

Our Legislature ignored the issue this year, but it's likely they'll be forced to do something about it in 2008 and they may have to come up with a solution like New Haven's.

the city already does something similar. it accepts the matricular consular as ID which is provided to Mexican citizens.

jeez, charles. you never pass up an opportunity to slander the "rural folk", do you? i'm not even sure how it fits into this story, and yet you found a way to do just that.

as someone who grew up in one of the most rural reaches of the continental united states, i can assure you - not everyone who lives outside a major city is a complete idiot. and as someone who now lives in one of the most urban areas in the united states - not everyone who lives in the city is "reasonable".

I'm sure the WH is hard at work creating a RFID-enhanced yellow star for them to wear.

@2, 5 Real ID is dead in the water. State after state is refusing to comply. Fairly soon, you'll have to use a passport, since it'll be the only acceptable form of ID.

BTW, I just read this article saying that New York City may do the same thing as New Haven.

Gitai@6: good to know. According to Wikipedia, "Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington have joined Maine in passing legislation opposing Real ID. A similar bill is pending in Massachusetts."

Charles is racist. That is why he hates "rural folks". In his home country, the "rural folks" were mostly white farmers (until mugabe either killed them or forced them off their lands). That bias is still with him.

ecce homo, you are an idiot from first to last. true, land has always been the issue in zimbabwe, but i was against removing white farmers because it meant a loss of black jobs. and besides, black banks owned the loans on those white farms. as for rural folks, anyone who has read me at all knows that i see them as social rather than racial group.
