Bush: Uniter, not Divider, at long last.

posted by on July 3 at 7:02 AM

Somehow, W manages to go lower than even the lowest of expectations. While I was initially enraged at the news he’d commuted Scooter’s prison sentence, now I’m amused. The commutation pisses off liberals just as much as a pardon would have. But by not going all the way and pardoning Scooter, Bush pisses off his loony conservative base as well.

He’s finally lived up to his campaign promises of 2000, uniting all Americans in anger.

Impeach. Cheney. Now.

Congressman Jim McDermott makes it now 11 in congress who support H.Res 333 to impeach the fucking weasel. Keep up the pressure. This is not the long shot many would have you believe. Remember, Clinton was impeached at the height of his popularity...

Hmm, which is worse:

A. George W. Bush: Commuting the sentence of a White House aid, Scooter Libby, who spent his entire life crime free until he committed perjury in a very convoluted case that had nothing to do with the initial crime of the matter.

B. Bill Clinton: Pardoning a financial crimes and fraud fugitive hiding out in Switzerland, Marc Rich, simply because his wife, Denise, contributes big bucks to a presidential library.

My answer to @4? B. Even though I think W is an awful president, I still maintain rational thinking by not being afflicted with Bush Derangement Syndrome.

It is difficult to think of a more discredited set of ideas than those by Mr. Savage.
The opposition to the war in this country may be wanting, but the people of Iraq are resisting. Thank God. Their real world resistance reminds me (and is as justified) as the Wolverines in the fictional movie, Red Dawn.

Andrew Sullivan voted for Bush, not only in 2000 but in 2004 when he (and so many others) should have already known better. So he should be blaming himself since he helped put him there. He doesn't mention that often enough.

raindrop @ 4,

You forgot to mention Bill Clinton's penis, which you're probably still fantasizing about.

@ #4, both A and B were shitty. What's your point? Does Clinton doing it first make it okay? If that's the case then maybe I will support impeachment.

I think, @1, that you're missing the point entirely. Savage supported the war initially, like 80% of the population. Like 90% of that 80%, Savage realizes that he made a mistake and has said so repeatedly. That's where the whole "unity" thing comes in- even people who supported the invasion or voted for Bush are now UNITED in their hatred for the man and his war. Recognizing your errors and correcting them is a sign of intellectual maturity. Maybe you'll demonstrate some of that one day.

Too bad about Raindrop's blindness. It must be a further symptom of his Clinton Derangement Syndrome. At least he's got 19% of the population to back him up.

@4 When will you Republicans learn that very elementary lesson that two wrongs don't make a right?

No, two wrongs don't make a right.

But a commuted sentence for Libby is not wrong because he remains a convicted felon. A pardon would be wrong for Libby. Marc Rich's pardon was a slap on the face of our justice system.

And no, I'm not a Republican. How naive to think that if I don't agree with the consensus on this thread that I am one.

@12 He just doesn't face any actual punishment for his conviction. He doesn't have to serve any jail time, and his legal defense fund will pay off his $250,000 fine, thanks to contributions from all his rich buddies. He's a lawyer, so perhaps he'll be disbarred. That's not going to affect his future employment options.

Michael Ledeen, one of the brains behind Iran-Contra mess who actually provided the Irani contacts, should have been reduced to poverty. Instead, he remained wealthy and was even consulted about Iraq prior to the invasion.

Robert McFarlane, who was convicted in Iran-Contra and pardoned by George, Sr. is running a mercernary company that operates in Iraq.

John Poindexter was convicted too, but he's become rich through defense contractor work.

So, Scooter is not going to be punished in any way, shape, or form, nor is anyone else associated with the massive damage done to our WMD intelligence network.

Hey, another difference between Marc Rich and Scooter Libby is that Marc Rich didn't have information that could put Bill Clinton in prison. This is totally a payoff so Scooter won't rat out his former bosses.

@7
Okay, I gotta call bullshit on that one. Sullivan very openly supported Kerry in 2004. You didn't have to pay much attention to see it, just not be blinded by your feelings.

@ 13, I've also read that having a commuted sentence means that Scooter can keep his 5th amendment rights regarding the case. If he were pardoned then that goes away.

I love how the people or person who run this blog are bent on continuing to spew mindless garbage in an effort to keep the public stuuuuuupid. What's in it for you to do this, I wonder? Who are you? What God do you worship? CORPORATE MONEY????
