the sentence was commuted, he was not pardoned. he still has to pay a fine and go on probation. so the conviction stands, but he wont have to serve jail time.

Baaahhhh!!!!! While I'm not shocked (even a little), I'm still fucking pissed. What a total raft of crap. I fucking hate Bush. How much do you want to bet that Haliburton or some other group close to the administration ends up quietly paying the $250,000 fine? Fuck!

For the Record. Today I predicted Scooter would get the pardon. I was told I was wrong. Sorry to those who thought I was wrong but. LOL!!!!

It's only fair since he commuted all those death sentences when he was governor of Texas. Oh wait, he had those people killed.

Never mind.

I just wonder how much Libby got in under-the-table deals to make this all happen for them. What's a presidential scapegoat get paid these days?

Not surprised, not even a little.

Every time you think that fucking asshole in the White House can't get any worse, he gets worse. What a motherfucking dribble of goat diarrhea he is.

Well, it was deserved. As I've been slogging over and over again IT WAS RICHARD ARMITAGE WHO leaked Valerie Plame's "covert" status. It doesn't matter what your politics are. Libby committed perjury, yes, but a fine is sufficient punishment since the prosecutor knew all along who leaded it but still dragged the trial on for months and tied up everybody's time and energy needlessly.

Andrew, there's a reason why it says to CLICK POST ONLY ONCE.

BTW, this isn't a pardon, his sentence was commutted. So you were wrong, at least until such a time that Bush waives the fine too.

In his statement, Bush says Libby's sentence was excessive. And garsh, we wouldn't want a government official lying to the justice department to be treated differently than some schmuck on the street, would we?

I assume it's just a matter of time before Bush, in his apoplectic fit of justice-giving, commutes this sentence, too.

Tucker Carlson's dad heads a fund to pay the fine so I don't think it counts as wrong. As usual with these guys, they're only telling half the story in hopes of confusing some of the people all of the time.

@18, Fitzgerald made it very clear that he believes Libby is covering for Cheney. Second, obstruction of justice necessarily slows the process down so please. Third, if I correctly recall, wasn't a President impeached for obstruction wrt some b.s. that wasn't a crime at all?

Andrew --

I am so sad that you were right. I really didn't think he would disregard public opinion and the coverage this would get until late late late in his final term.

I forgot who we are dealing with here. JEEZUS A LITTLE PART OF MY ONCE THRIVING PRIDE IN THIS SYSTEM DIES EVERY TIME HE DOES SOMETHING (sorry all caps)

You guys are laughably gullible. What honestly did you expect? How is this a surprise?

Posted by Gomez | July 2, 2007 3:49 PM

While a pardon or some kind of preferential treatment was expected, it is worth noting that Scooter Libby was the only person in this administration who faced any kind of accountability for his actions.

All of them are the worst of the worst; truly horrible people who will soon go on to be corporate CEOs, political book authors and professors in the liberal academia that they claim to despise, where they’ll train the next generation of sociopaths who will be a thousand times worse.

@26: I'm not surprised that he did it. I just didn't think he had the outright gall to do it now. I figured he'd do it as he was skulking out of office in late 2008.

God I can't stand these people. Our country is run by a gang of sleazy, lying, smug, self-centered assholes who are constantly covering for eachother. How much crap does a president have to sling at the people before they get tired of his shit and push him out. This may not be a surprise coming from Bush, but it still pisses me off.

Good Lord! There's no precedent for this kind of crass cronyism in this administration! I'm shocked ... shocked.

Posted by tsm | July 2, 2007 4:03 PM

For once I agree with Gomez--why the shock?

But the thing i find notable is W's statement. First, it's of course ridiculous that he "finds the prison sentence excessive." He wouldn't know an appopriate prison sentence from a barn door. Second, when is the last time this Adminstration actually acknowledged the existence of arguments on both side of an issue? Refrained from labeling anyone with a different point of view unpatriotic or motivated enirely by partisanship?

Yawn. I can't get any more worked up over this. Your average person in American doesn't care, won't care, and will forget all about this in 2 weeks.

I knew this was going to happen, though I thought it would happen later in Bush's term.

Even though I expected this, I'm shocked. I didn't think I would be, but I am. It's just so typical of this administration and so over the top that even an overloaded sense of outrage responds.

I usually oppose impeachment on the grounds that it's not politically practical, but at this point it's a matter of principle to at least make the effort. ITMFA!

No point in writing another diatribe. Sadly, diatribes against the Bush administration are just getting redundant.

Democracy Now noted that by commuting (rather than pardoning) Scooter retains
the right to plead the 5th amendment if
called to testify before Congress. Thus,
commuting the sentence is the best means of Bush ensuring the truth never comes out.
