Here you go, plowing your brain on things that were never made for absolute understanding and clarity.

So, they treat you like family. They treat you like people. You're kindred spirits. Or, they're just expressing that they'll treat you well. It's marketing, Charles.

What would you prefer?

"Treats me like part of the Tribe!"

"Treats me like we're ancestors!"

"Treats me like a stranger!"

"Treats me like a gambler!"

-or-

"Treats me like family!"

Gee, I wonder which one is an American family man going to acknowledge coherently?

honestly, I would prefer: "treats me like a tribe?" How strange it would be to see that on a bus sign.

Hi Charles, this line about families- "they have been reduced to an empty place for empty faces" made me sad. Do you really feel like this is the contemporary family experience? Could you go into that a bit. I don't really know what you mean. Thank you.

Yeah, I've wondered about that ad before. Next time you see it, look REAL hard at the expression on the man's face. The eyes in particular give him a aura of wild desperation, this man's about to lose it. Exactly how I feel when with family

They are marketing to Americans, Charles.

I'll admit, it probably would not make much of a difference, but that wasn't my point. My point was that you are the last person on the face of the planet that should be discussing marketing. Especially when the target market are Americans.

Make a banner for QCC and post it here on Slog. Your target market: The White, rich, American Family Man. And no, you may not use any of which I posted.

I like how whenever I'm reading a Slog post, as soon as it starts telling me what something means, what it really means, I know it's Charles. And that whatever it is really means something dumb, probably about capitalism.

Also, @ 14: Is it me, or does that tornado thing look like Mr. Glitch, from the Mathman segments of Square One?

#10 he's so sad - This ad has been bugging me since they replaced the one with the lady and the slightly misshapen face declaring "I win more at QCC!" This one though...standing at the bus stop you can check it out close up - the guy's been shaving with a dull razor, little hairs sticking up in random places and his eyes betray his defeated hopeful desperation. "They treat me like family. Like a family would but I'm oh so alone, will you be my friend? Please?"

I know just how this guy in the ad feels. Tony Soprano's breakin my balls over a huge debt I ran up in the Executive Game; he and his thugs are living out of my sporting goods store, stealing my cross-trainers. So when I head up to QCC I get that same sick-to-my-stomach all-is-lost-kind of feeling. Thanks, QCC!

Charles, aren't you always talking about how destructive the politics of tribalism are in Africa? Wouldn't "Treats me like a member of the tribe" imply to some degree that others outside the casino are enemies?

I hate that place. I hate that sign. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who sees the saddness in that man's eyes, and wonders, 'who are the ad wizards who came up with this?'

I used to go there regularly. Back when it was the only casino in Marysville -- err, "Tulalip"... But then it became "The Q", as they like to be called, and I worked there for 4 months of pure hell.

"TREATS ME LIKE FAMILY MEANS"... "Even though I am as white as a marshmallow, when I go to The Q and spend my pension sitting at the penny slots betting $9 a pull for 10 hours a day I'm still a winner because maybe they'll take pity on my sorry ass and pick me as a "Hot Seat" winner".

The Tulalips are known for discriminating. This cannot be argued. They discriminate against color, and lack of revenue... I know that I was discriminated against because I didnt sit around the bar getting wasted with my co-workers after hours, or gamble away my heard-earned tips, or run outside while on the clock to smoke every 15 minutes (employees must smoke outside)... I was discriminated against because I am wholesome, maintained a professional appearance, and happen to be very, very pale & white.

Perhaps the Indian perception of the White man's "family" is one where your people feed you minor euphoria and distraction while taking what is valuable from you.

Kinda seems historically appropriate, given what white families did to indian families, y'know?

And yeah, I noticed these bus signs too, and yes, they are messed-up.
