Slog - Comments on Who's the Dean of '08?

Personally, I don't think anyone is going to be the Dean of '08. This is such a fundamentally different race than we saw in 2004, and such a settled field of contenders (even the undeclared wild-cards are known and being polled about), that looking for the Dean of '08 is a waste of time, a reliving of the past, a fighting of the last battle — take your pick of dismissive cliché. But plenty of other people seems to be looking for a new Dean. Today Jeff Zeleny delivers the latest in this genre, exploring whether Obama could be the...

Yeah, good thinking Obama! Except that every other candidate is thinking the same thing. This isn't 2003. It's 2007. Everyone is on the Internets nowadays... on the Googles and the Facespaces and all that.

Ummmm....the new Dean? Why should anyone be looking for, much less wanting someone to be the "new Dean"? Have we forgotten that Dean imploded on us, failing when needed most? Sorry, been there, done that; once is plenty, thank you

@2 That was my thought as well. Obama is still an establishment candidate. Dean was outside the establishment and he was despised for rocking it. Paul fits that description perfectly. Plus, Paul is raising his name recognition and his funds through internet word of mouth and organized meet ups. Paul is also speaking to Goldwater conservatives in his party as Dean spoke to anti-war progressives in the Democratic party. Paul is definitely the Dean of '08.

@2 - yeah, you're right. It's Ron Paul.

The media will build him up and then tear him down.

Comment by W. Churchill

You can have, and take, a new Dean.

For the democrat to win she or he has to have a real defense and security program, including a plan to deal with terrorism and the mess we made in Iraq. Specifically we should pull out of Iraz AND ALSO have a plan to deal with it
(a) in Iraq if they try to kill all the Kurds,
(b) if genocide gets really bad in Iraq,
(c) if Al Queda does establish a stronghold in part of Iraq (I do not believe they have yet, but they might), if Iran takes over the Shia part and SA takes over the Sunni part, etc.
(c) deal with resurgent Taliban in Afgh.
(d) oh yeah, maybe we should catch bin Laden, ya think?
and try TMF
(e) restoring respect for the USA w/ somekind of reparations plan for Iraq and otherwise building int'l alliances again for int'l police work and defunding Al-Q;
(f) reduce need for oil and just get out of middle east generally, the hell with their squabbles,
(g) press for better solution in Israel-Palestine quagmire;
(h) beef up disaster readiness at home including NO hurricanes, PNW earthquakes, fires in LA etc. as well as a scary terrorist mega attack.

In other words saying "end the war" feels pretty good, but it is only a start and the Dems really do need a plan.

Obama will be the Dean of '08. He's a fresh candidate with a unique, engaging perspective, and he will commit some trivial gaffe and get swept under the rug as the Dems get behind the most neutral, populist candidate they have.

... and then wonder why it came down to getting screwed in a swing state again, while Dems miss the point once again. I wonder what '08's corrupted swing state will be. It was Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004. I'm gonna say it's Illinois in 2008.
