Sports What’s Up Doc J?

onThe Sonics selected UT star Kevin Durant—and now there’s all sorts of crazy trade talks in play … Allen, Lewis, etc…
I report this only because it gives me an excuse to haul out the greatest NBA quote of all time—which took place in the wake of some significant trade action eons ago.
I recite it from hazy memory.
After Dr. J was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in the wake of the NBA/ABA merger, his new teammate, 76ers’ star George McGinnis said: “Doctor. We’re gonna do a number.” Or as we used to say it on the playground: “Doctah, we’re going to do a numbah.”
If anyone can find this quote in print please send it my way. It was either in SI or Sport when the NBA and the ABA merged at the top of the ‘76-77 season. I’ve Googled every which way I can trying to find the quote, and I can’t turn it up.
Footnote: McGinnis and the Doctah did take the Sixers to the finals that year, but were stunned in six games by Portland.

I have an old issue of Sports Ilustrated where God (dr. J) is on the cover. He was with the Nets back then, but it was before he went to heaven( Philly) I beleive there is a quote there, I ll check it out.
Thx for putting a pic of the flying fro. The doc has no equals.
Oh and by the way, Portland is going to be unstopable next year. Yikes.
the above slog post was a lot of wah-wah wah wah-wah-wah to me. but i did understand it was about the sonics.
in related and equally confusing (to me) news: a little airplane was just flying around the CD with banner saying something like "the supes are back. go sonics." to which i thought, isn't boys basketball season over?
can anyone explain? or did someone just have some cash burning a hole in their pocket?
All that blah, blah, blah about trading Allen. Gee, the Sonics are going to be great in 5 years when they're playing in OC. At least, we're not paying for an arena.
Yeah, the same plane was in Belltown. I had to do a double-take that it was the same Sonics associated with basketball since the season ended , oh, two weeks ago!!!
I'm glad we managed to dupe, er, convince, the Sonics to take Wally "Two Zs, no D" Szczerbiak for Ray Allen. Too bad about Delonte West, though - Celtics fans will definitely miss him.
