This is a great idea!
Glad to hear they're doing it.
June 6 = three weeks ago I think.
I was taking my usual mid week bourbon at Serafina last night and remarked on how busy the place continues to be. A Seattle gem, it is.
Who wants the date with Mr. I Ain't Afraid of No Bullets?
Jackie: Thanks re: calendar math, fixed.
Does Miles prefer to date men or women?
Nevermind. Girls. Thank you myspace.
To detach this from the harm this Miles person (who I don’t know) suffered and no offense on my part is intended towards Miles, his pain and his bravery, however…
It seems like the owner’s of Serafina are not really very responsible business owners who *really* care about employees… if they offered health insurance and short term disability insurance to its employees from the get go, so that between that coverage, state-funded worker’s injury compensation (and perhaps crime victim’s compensation as well), then there would have been no need for the owner’s to assuage their guilty by hitting up their customers for money. His recover cost would have been covered from the get-go.
Or Serafinas’ owners could just (even though it is seemingly un-American, since there would be no part of the “proceeds” for Serafina to retain) give him the money he needs while healing, instead of holding these seemingly self-serving fanfare of “benefit night(s)”. Just say’in.
@ Phenics
I think the general lack of health benefits is the main reason to avoid the seductive trap of the often lucrative restaurant / bar service industry. I LOVED being a waiter -- I had more cash every night than I knew what to do with, the hours fit my nocturnal lifestyle and alcoholic sensibilities, and I was always well fed with little to know grocery bills.
But yeah, at the end of the day it's a career trajectory fraught with peril, at least on the health benefits score, and one that people willingly follow because the money is so good.
It's sucky that a guy doesn't have the bennies to take care of an expensive bullet removal surgery, but I don't fault the management at Serafina for being like every other bar/restaurant there is.
There isn't some "hero clause" in the insurance industry that allows for uninsured peeps hurt during an act of bravery or whatever to be treated for free? SUCKY.
Ack. Little to KNOW grocery bills?
David, I'll mail you my SLOG commenting badge by the end of the day.
Can't he file a workman's comp claim? It was, afterall, an on the job injury.
Vote John Edwards.
Phenics @ 6 is exactly right. don't praise the Serafina peeps, this is absolutely the very least they could do. however, dude was a moron for getting shot. deserved what he got in my opinion. after all, how much cash did he save the restaruant by getting shot? let say there was 1K in the register that he prevented the guy from stealing. shouldn't he automatically get that thousand upfront? this whole benefit is complete bullshit. Serafina should be paying his bills regardless.
@11:
deserved what he got in my opinion.
Miles said in an interview that he said he wished he just let the robber rob him. Regardless, the blame totally does not hang on Miles but totally hangs on that cowardly thug. And who knows? There are too many hold ups where the thief shoots anyway, after getting the money.
