Tortoise (MUSIC) The term "post-rock" has become a nondescriptor, but if it applies to anyone it applies to Tortoise. The Chicago quintet comprises five virtuoso players, egalitarian in their approach, angling toward a shifting, dramatic sort of instrumental equilibrium. Yeah, it's brainy stuff, but a band this comfortable with breaking bounds can make trigonometry sound soulful. (Neumo's, 925 E Pike St, 709-9467. 8 pm, $15, 21+.)

One of the few times I was at CHAC was for a video night. People apparently went out in the neighborhood with fancy cams and broadcasted short performances in realtime. It would be 'cool' if we could have a live visual feed from Neumos tonight, or viceversa.

You know what's really groundbreaking? Indie pop! You just never know what's coming next!

I'm with Snarf--and amazed that a band as bereft of ideas as Tortoise would stick together as long as they have. (16 years! Or, approximately 6 more years than the Beatles!) Imagine if, like, the Sea and Cake was still around today. Wouldn't that be almost creepy? Wait a second...

Well, Levislade, if "groundbreaking" was really important, maybe you'd have a point. Or not. But it isn't, so who cares?

Because, as I'm sure you will agree, SNARK is the important thing here.
