I'll spend a large amount of money on a really amazing piece (sweaters especially) that I'll be able to wear for years, but I buy inexpensive jeans, t-shirts, etc. Even if I had the money to buy "top shelf" all the time, I don't think I would -- jeans are a good example. There isn't a hell of a lot of difference between a $60 pair of jeans from The Gap and a $600 pair from John Galliano. The Galliano will be a slightly more interesting cut, but we're still talking about cotton denim fabric. Hardly a $500 plus difference. But when you're talking about a sweater (or tailored jacket, or shoes) there are a lot more variables that come into play. Materials, craftsmanship, etc.
