The Next Jordan

posted by on June 1 at 8:59 AM

Returning the player image from bling to the basics, LeBron, “after the breathtaking display of talent [that] gave the Cavs a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference finals,” said:

“I’m banged up. I’m winded. I’m fatigued.. I’ve got all day tomorrow. It’s going to be tough to get some rest when you got a crazy, 2-year-old running around the house. So hopefully, I can take him to one of his grandma’s house.”
Fatherhood? Childcare? Grandmas? These are things that, even jokingly, could never come out of Allen Iverson’s mouth, which is why, despite his prodigious ball skills, he never became the next Jordan.

Mudede, you are wrong on every count. Iverson likes to talk about his family. He is generally candid and unguarded. Jordan didn't talk about his family much. He gave canned answers about the game, wearing his designer suit, and avoided the personal. Iverson couldn't be the next Jordan because he never had good teammates in his prime, was too small, seemed too street for a middle-aged white press, etc.

Moreover, no one can become the next Jordan because Jordan has been mythologized to such a ridiculous degree that everyone forgets his flaws and the help he had. Everyone wants to come down on Kobe and Lebron for not "carrying their teams" the way Jordan did, but neither has an All-NBA teammate like Jordan did in Pippen, nor a third wheel as good as Dennis Rodman or even Ron Harper or Horace Grant. Total horseshit. Don't talk your basketball unless you know it, Charles.

Lebron put on a hell of a show last night and he finally did what he was suppose to do. Dont dish out the ball and take over the game- youre the best player in the game.

Now Charles, youre usually spot on, but obviously you been hanging around the white folks too long and they have you spitting out their version of Allen the answer Iverson. The racist version of the thug playa.

Obviously you dont know jack about Iverson.

Let me remind you that Allen married his high school sweet heart, always brought his kids to his press conferences, was loyal to his team, his city (Philly) his fans, the inner city kids, he was more Jordan than Michael the basketball sneaker pimp Jordan could ever be, more of a model to the inner city than Jordan. Iverson was loyal to his friends from Virginia, his mom, his community so in a way youre right, he wasnt Jordan, he was a lot more real and less polished than Jordan and to a lot of non white people he was more like Muhamad Ali than Jordan.

Wrong: Mudede, you are wrong on every count. Iverson likes to talk about his family.

Wrong, it's important to keep in mind that Mr. Mudede here is not talking about either (A) the actual Allen Iverson or (B) the prevalent public perception of Allen Iverson. He is talking about his own misinformed, mistaken perception of Allen Iverson. So in this respect, Mr. Mudede's post is entirely accurate.

P.S. I believe the above clarification could apply to what Charles Mudede has to say about a whole range of topics.

And the fact that allen iverson could barely play defense at all and has never been able to gaurd anyone over 6'4"

i was thinking about public relations, not reality. do you really think lebron cant afford a babysitter? that he has to take his kid to his grandma to get a rest? it's all PR. in PR, iverson can saying nothing about family life. PR is a war iverson lost and lebron is winning.

yeah sure, thats why the media, white mainstream folks ( outside of Philly) disliked Iverson. Its defense that they cared about. Sure.

Nevermind that he played injured, played with heart, took it strong against men twice his size, was absolutely fearless when he played and was also a great team mate and mentor.

Nevermind when he played with Carmelo they both led the NBA in scoring for more than a month, eventhough they said two ball hogs would never amount to anything.

The truth is they hate him for not being a corporate Tom like Jordan. Thats a fact. America didnt want him to be uppity. It is the same reason why the white press gave Larry Bird a pass eventhough he fathered more kids than Shawn Kemp. It is plain and simple racism and Mudede is way off.

The PR war argument is weak as hell. Iverson was targeted just like Ali. Remember how much he was hated in the past. Iverson was not liked because he was easy to hate by the mainstream media, he was easy like hating rap. Easy to call him names. The PR campaign could never be won by Iverson because he doesnt control the media.

I recomend that you read the book Whats my name Fool- sports and resistence in the United States, by what is perhaps the greatest leftist writer in North America sports today.

What the fuck are you talking about ? Bird has one biological and two adopted kids, kemp has eight children with seven different women.

Who- according to his daughter corrie- didnt have any contact or payed any child support.

Yeah, if Iverson didnt pay child support we'd be hearing shit from the press.

no one is the next jordan. iverson will always be relevant; iverson is winning.

lebron is lebron. king james has arrived.

Thank you angela. For the record I am a fan of Lebron's caliber of play. He took ove that game. I want to see him smack the Spurs and pimp slap Ginobli.

To be fair, the Pistons are not 100%

dude, charles. why you gotta hate on my boy?

SeMe, excellent points re: Iverson. Iverson was/is a pivotal figure in American culture. He was a black dude athlete from the ghetto who was unwilling to change who he was to meet the expectations of white people. He was the first truly hip hop athlete. Since he blazed that trail, it’s now become fairly common.

That said, it doesn’t matter whether the Pistons are 100%. They aren’t 100% and never will be, because they don’t have Ben Wallace. Do you think Big Ben would’ve just watched when LeBron took it up for the 2nd uncontested dunk in a row with the game on the line?

Detroit’s mojo is gone.

so what about all the people like iverson who dont have half the talent to even watch basketball who hold on to the image?

people, i prefer allen's ball to james'. i'm just stating the nature of the public discourse. allan should have been the next jordan but that did not turn out to be the case. we know why. james will be the next jordan. if i'm wrong, it is because i'm reading this larger cultural text wrong.

but a simple fact: stern wants a new jordan, he has been looking for one since the mid 90s. the next jordan is for stern the messiah of b-ball marketing.

I'm a white mainstream kid. I enjoyed getting driven to a couple of Sixers games as a 10 yr old, when I was in awe of pro sports guys. Darryl Dawkins, Caldwell Jones, Dr. J, Bobby Jones, World B. Free, Doug Jones, Billy Cunningham. I cried when my older brother could afford a 76 decal-ed mini-b-ball, and played keep away.

I'm glad I had no probing interest in these star's private lives and their press conferences. The talent and grace they possessed on the court was what I was into. Oh, and smashing glass backboards to bits was fun too!

People who rely on the press for their own opinions and tastes are candidates for extras if a sequel to Idiocracy is made. And those who care so much about these people probably won't go see the movie, least of all, Stern.

Charles that’s not what you said. You said, that Iverson is not Jordan cuz he doesn’t talk about family and grandmom. And yes youre reading it wrong. James will never be the next Jordan.

James is a monster hoopster, the best in the game RIGHT NOW. He will never be Jordan because he can not be packaged that way. There were 2 Jordans. One, was the greatest basketball player of all time ( after Bill Russell) and the other was the basketball pimp that was marketed for his charm and OJ type smile. Lebron doesn’t have that. Sorry. The next Jordan was scheduled to be Kobe, it was all good to go, but he committed the ultimate sin. He raped a young white woman..

Garrett- I grew up in Camden, and was at the Spectrum’s cheap seat to watch God (Dr. J) play

BB- With Ben Wallace in the line up, Detroit wins this series, plain and simple, that’s what I meant when I said the Pistons are not 100%

SeMe:
Well, if you want say Dr. J was "God", then I'll say Dawkins was the "Devil".

Didn't you get a rush from those smashed backboards? I think he did it on two occasions. After the second, they started making the glass with different materials or maybe the break-away rims were then invented. I'll check YouTube for any footage of DD ducking out from under the glass downpour.

seme, detroit not being 100% has nothing to do with ben wallace--anymore. (for the record, i love big ben. i've got an inflatable wallace.)it's not the same team; we gotta let ben go.

i don't know what's up with the pistons right now, but it has way more to do with chauncy billups and rip hamilton not playing their best, and chris webber not being a factor than ben wallace.

so its another case of the white man holding back yet another black man from greatness because that black man isn't an uncle tom?

or could it be that jordan was actually amazing to watch and put up huge numbers?

or both?

It is so good to see people commenting on this article about the NBA players and actually respecting their skill rather than the typical conversation I have about the NBA. These usually consist of the other person bitching about salaries, dull play, thugs, drawn out playoffs, and the "pureness" of college sports. I hope LeBron dunks on Manu so the latter ends up with an Arabian Mask.

The refs also help. It IS the NBA. Remember "The Jordan Rules."
