If the tribe wants to pay for it I'm all for them building the stadium. They can even rename them the Muckleshoot Sonics and Storm.

I suggested years ago that the City should sell the Key to the Muckelshoots, give them the land and make it reservation land. Then we can have the Sonics and Gambling on Queen Anne while not having to pay anything for it. A beautiful idea.

I thought the whole reason that Las Vegas wasn't an option was because the NBA had issues with the city's gambling. I wonder if the same issues will surface with this idea.

But Las Vegas was just the site for the NBA All Star Weekend/Game and it was hugely successful. I think the NBA is reconsidering allowing a team in Vegas. As long as the players, coaches, and owners don't bet on sports, there shouldn't be a problem.

Don't move the Sonics... they bring in more money than we as taxpayers spend on them... and it adds culture to our city. In our quest to become a world class city, sacrifices must be made.... tear down the viaduct and put the damn thing underground, keep the sports teams, and build a mass transit system that goes to the major metro areas, including Bellevue that doesn't use the BUS.

where do you get your numbers, jason? i would be curious to see what the sonics bring in vs. what has been spent (and will be spent) on key arena--also, what would be spent to keep them here.

There are just too many actually important civic projects that need to be built and anybody who thinks we need sports teams to create "culture" should visit the cultureless sports havens of Orlando Phoenix and Denver.

Even though I hate the idea of 20,000 (or whatever) cars trekking across the suburbs every home game, I would LOVE it if they renamed the team the Muckleshoot Storm/Sonics. Maybe even the Muckleshoot Slots/Craps?

I know my company books huge venues in cities like Las Vegas, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago every year. We have a very strong relationship with a local company who makes software over in Redmond who has founders with strong local sports ties. We have never been able to hold anything larger than a software conference here in Seattle since the Convention center was too small. A new facility large enough would certainly attract us here given our West Coast HQ and our relationship with local partners in Seattle. Gregoire�s comments about the increased in value to the region to have one are on target. This year we are running three simultaneous conferences in Vegas in July and are booking most of the hotels and advertising revenue in Vegas for a full week as a result. Add to that periperal rental car revenue, (and taxes), restaurants, tourist ventures etc. and you have a lot of money being spent on the area that gets the gigs. We even have a private concert every year that fills up a Key Arena size faciltiy for some second tier artist.
