Thompson is ahead for 2 reasons: (1) He hasn't actually declared yet, has made almost no policy statements on anything, and almost nobody knows anything about him except that he used to play a DA on Law and Order. (2) They're all having delusions of Regan, hoping that Thompson will be Regan II.

The minute he actually declares, and starts participating in debates or has to start answering questions by reporters, his popularity will tank.

This is the first R that isn't seriously flawed (angry/crazy, flip-flopper, or pro-choice.) Reagan was pretty fucking lazy and stupid, too. They'll get behind him and run with the ball. While we shoot each other in the head over the war and globalization decades old violations of PC canon...
