Well that's not cool. That's not cool at all.
Way to go, Fairview Fanny.
I took some hits off a joint for lunch -breakfast? and that headline is silly as hell! Dom, if I can control my giggling, I'm spending all today paging through High Times.
Well, when you have a drag queen as your "official announcer", thats the kind of thing you will get.
You can't have it both ways. You can't put out Dragsters as the face of "Queerness", then get upset when people expect it.
This crap makes queers like me (who are just normal, no makeup or womens clothes) get a bad name and makes things definately harder.
Oh lord, ecce homo. So you're "normal" and people who wear makeup and women's clothing aren't? Good way to put your foot in it. :-)
I don't know... Is this really any more offensive than if they'd actually put a "silly 'drag' headline" there? If the thing had read "Dude looks like a lady!" or anything just as dumb, would you be offended? If the honest answer is no, then why be offended by the accidental declaration of intent to do so? Is it the word "silly," being so blatantly bandied about that injures one's pride?
I thought it was funny, but only because someone forgot to write the head. If you look any further into it you need to ask yourself: "Am I an uptight prick or what?"
LMAO, I thought it was funny in the Onion kind of way.
"In the twenty years since the Chernobyl tragedy, the world's worst nuclear accident, there have been nearly [FILL IN ALARMIST AND ARMAGEDDONIST FACTOID HERE]"
Nice work, Times copy editor! How much does that guy get paid again?
Ummm...it's still up there. It just might be intentional. Which is either really pathetic or really funny, depending on your sense of humor.
Come on. It's drag. Drag is silly. That's the point of it. Or did you actually think you were a woman all those years you did drag, Dan? ;-)
If it's intentional, it's hilarious. If it's accidental, it's sloppy and funny and inoffensive.
Wheres the outrage??!!!!!
It's Bush's fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Catalina at 12, I totally second you. Drag is camp. Drag is fun, and pretty much always silly. It shouldn't cause offense...I think it's hysterical!
The Drag and the Religous freaks by Macy's were the only two things that made the parade really worth watching! Other than that it was the same thing as last year. Thank GOD for the Drag Queens!!! They were the only fun thing in the entire parade!!!!
5:22 AND IT'S STILL THERE!
#3 Hey asshole. Get your own fucking name.
6:15 pm : Still there.... wow.
Maybe that's what they wanted to say. What are you going to do? Write an outraged letter to the editor?
Seattle is supposed to be an enlightened city. If a bunch of uptight homos can't take a gentle kidding, what does that say about us? That we can dish it out, but shouldn't be expected to take it? After all, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence themselves say that they mean no offense, and that it's all in fun.
So did anyone else notice that there appeared to be even less fundraising at this years festival then last year. Not to mention substantially fewer booths.(not ot mention poorly laid out) How the fuck do they plan to pay the 100k for the park not to mention the debt. With the under 4k they have raised on the website over 4 months. Last year they had a new venue and a did not anticipate the problems, but two years in a row. Come on.
The parade as usual was great and a lot of fun and despite the threat of rain seemed well attended.
Oh, that's funny.
Nothing to be offended by, just a hilarious mistake.
SOaP has nothing to do with the Festival - only the 4th avenue parade. They have learned from their mistakes last year, raised record sponsorship $, are paying their debt to the city and turned a profit. And the Parade downtown was great. Well done. BTW how much did YOU give today - I bet I can guess.
@ 21 - You 'Come On'. Seattle Out and Proud didn't produce the festival. Only the 'great', 'well attended' event. Idiot. They have turned their ship around, are paying the debt and made a PROFIT. Some of you haters just won't get off it - pathetic. After all YOU attended the parade THEY produced and had a great time - right? If you are worried about what the festival producer made this year, get out your check book.
slog is such a drag.
I probably would have given money if there was a place to do it. No buckets, no requests nothing. Honestly I'm not going to go out of my way to support pride. Sure I enjoy it, but on the list of things I will give money to its not that high. However if I had seen a bucket or a person requesting funds I probably would have thrown five or ten bucks in the bucket. Same like I do at hempfest or any other festival. Same like just about anybody who attends a festival. Yah in an ideal world people would all go out of their way to donate, but unfortunately we live in the world of reality were most people will not think of donating unless somebody essentially forces them to ala most festivals. If SOAP did not do the festival apparently who ever did didn’t learn there lesson from SOAP’s debacle.
Congrats to SOAP for again putting on a great parade. But based on their website their fundraising is not that great http://www.seattlepride.org/ I’m sorry but they have been at this for months and haven’t even broken 4 grand. Look only so many people will seek you out and give you money. There is just too many things that deserve money and honestly most people aren’t going to give scarce resources to a party planning commission without prodding. You have to guilt people and call them and make it easy. You have to actually FUNDRAISE. Put up buckets at the parade have people walking the route asking for money to support the parade.
Drag just freaks me the fuck out. If its the over-the-top types, I just think they are weird, but its the guys who think they look like women that just make me want to vomit.
Not that I care what people do or how they dress, it just makes me sick to my stomach to see people making such fools of themselves in public.
Gay pride is an oxymoron. Most gays seem so self destructive and bitter that the once a year fest seems like nothing more than just another reason for drinking, drugging and showing the rest of society that our team is made up largely of fat guys in diapers or dresses or leather. Enough.
@23 & 24 (if you're really two people, after all, nice ALL CAPS)
Profit? You mean after the $100K you owe the city, or before? And who gets that profit, exactly? YOU?
City = Seattle Center in above post. Oops.
Amen #27
You hit the nail right on the head.
If the Stranger had written the same headline on purpose, we'd all take it in stride. Get a grip.
Plus, the head they chose to fill it in was actually worse. Be careful what what you ask for.
I watched the Sisters perform, and it was abysmal. Dreamgirls? Talk about a drag racer dragging a dead horse down the main drag without enough drugs to fool the droogs and knuckle-draggers.
How about this: "Drag Out Your Dead"?
@ 10 - The problem is there is no copy editor for their website. At least not for the headlines, or any of the short blurbs.
@27 & @30, I know your type: You like to talk about how manly you are, and how you ab-so-lute-ly can't STAND those drag queens, for they represent us not, and set us back so.
But late at night, after a few cocktails, and once the blinds are drawn, out comes the wig, heels and gown - and on the stereo goes "She-who-cannot-be-named at Carnegie Hall"
And a good time is had by one.
They already know that the previous bills have been paid AND they made a profit? Hmmm, that sounds rather interesting that they knew that the day of the festival and parade. Before we start being overly positive or negative let's wait until they do their final tally's and get all the final bills for pride before we go on the attack or defense.
And from where I was standing they WERE asking for donations, at least by Macy's, and yeah I threw in $10.00. What did the rest of you donate?
What did the final headline say? The last time I looked was around 6pm last night and it hadn't changed.
I think anyone who's ever worked on a newspaper (or publication) knows knows that type of shit happens all the time. I'm sure everyone at the Stranger smiled and thanked God (or whoever) it wasn't them. Jay Leno has made a (mediocre) career out of these editing slip-ups.
My buddy got fired from the college newspaper for letting the caption "Some asshole making a goal" slip into press. Now that's hilarious!
#33,
Believe it or not, not all gay men are into drag. That doesn't make them bad people, traitors or liars.
Some gay men are attracted to men that are masculine, and are comfortable with their own masculinity.
I know...it's horribly shocking. Practically an aberration. Freakish, really.
Nevertheless, as a community that prides itself on diversity, we should remind ourselves that these people exist, treat them with basic respect, and not assume that they're lying for some unknown reason.
