In the second link, it is horrible what the landlord is doing to Tim Alf, the man brutally attacked in his own apartment following a break-in.

He lived there for two weeks, and the landlord is withholding the first and last month's rent and security? Because blood got everywhere when the attackers cut his throat?

Mr. Alf should find an attorney as quickly as possible; he can likely get one for free from a local legal services agency because this is likely a violation of state and federal law, because crime victims are generally protected from this kind of discrimination and exploitative treatment.

Before anyone cries any tears for the landlord, I'll theorize that it is likely that homeowner's insurance covers this kind of damage, so the landlord has no need to apparently break so many laws in order to fix the damage.

And who knows, a proper investigation might show that the landlord failed to provide adequate security to Mr. Alf's home, so please, Mr. Alf, obtain legal counsel so you can make sure that all of your potential rights are protected.

1- James was a good man and will be missed. He was a fixture in our little corner of the hill.
----------
2- As for the attacker people; That is crazy! Also, I feel like this happened before in the last two years. Same situation, they met outside the Madison market, nice guy told them they could come over, in the same hood as this attack, but I remember this guy was stabbed when he was sleeping and the people who did it got away. Does this ring bells to anybody else?

it is from two years ago, the date is on the upper left corner of the page.

Oh, you are right! I saw today's date in the upper right corner on the same page, that is what confused me.

Second incident is criminal and tragic...

But a sentence that reads "Suspects using this defense could face increased the attackers’ sentences should they be convicted under Washington State’s malicious harassment law..."

is criminal and comic.

Gawd SGN is painful to read.

So if this happened two years ago, how did the thing with his landlord get resolved? Hopefully, Alf sued the pants off that bastard.

I can't believe what he's been through. Aweful. But he survived.

Just looked these guys up in the WA courts database. You probably wouldn't invite them in after seeing their criminal record.

I'd like to know what happened, too - there's absolutely nothing online except for the original story.

I probably would not invite the homeless in period. There are safer ways to help then an invitation to your home. Let's face it, while some people are homeless due to unfortunate circumstances, many are homeless becasue of extreme mental illness, criminal behavior, and substance abuse. None of which make for a good house guest.

He invited them over to "take a shower or something." Not smart.

But he's gay, so its a hate crime.

After all, if a victim of a crime is gay it AUTOMATICALLY makes it a hate crime. So My suggestion to my fellow homos out there, put yourself in an obviously dangerous situation, get a beat down, then claim its due to "hate".

It certainly makes the acceptance and tolerance of gays much easier when people see us as perpetual victims.

BTW: Fuck real change. Let them eat dog food.

@11,

The suspects claimed they attacked Alf because he was "flirting" with them. So, in other words, they implicated themselves in a hate crime.

Based on Alf's story, it sounded more like straightforward attempted murder/robbery, but it's hardly his fault if the idiot suspects fessed up to a hate crime.

11: Maybe the state should make you eat dog food for a while. It would be a fitting punishment for being an asshole. Is it a hate crime to make uppity yuppies eat dog food if they're gay?

This old news. Don't pick of street trash and bring them in for coctails and have the run of the place. It's not a hate crime - it's a STUPID crime.

It certainly makes the acceptance and tolerance of gays much easier when people see us as perpetual victims.

Would you rather get beat up for being gay in some rural town and then have the police/prosecutor/judge ignore your case because they hate gays too? That's why hate crime laws exist.

This has nothing to do with people seeing gays as "perpetual victims" (if that's some sort of horrible problem to have, anyway). There are hate crime laws in the US for religious and political persuasions as well. Are Christians and Republicans perpetual victims too?

Yeah,

all those republicans being victims of hate crimes is definately a problem. PUHLEEZE.

Oh, and if you are too dumb to figure out whats wrong with being percieved (quite rightly so in the current context) as perpetual victims, then their is little hope for our brothers and sisters living in truly intolerant places.

Does anyone have any links to any followup (s) in the whole issue with the landlord? I currently rent from Curtis West Properties (it's actually called Freeman West - Curtis is the elder who is the original owner, and Freeman is his son-in-law's name) and have for over a year) and am rather concerned about what they did in this situation (especially with taking the cat to the pound.)

@ 17: you can try running your landlord's name, and his father-in-law's name, and the name of the corporation that owns your building (if one exists) into the Washington Courts database at:

In Tim's defense, the fact that these guys worked for Real Change would have lowered my guard. I still would not have invited them in, but I would have assumed that Real Change screened out people with a record of violent crime.
