"An Experiment With An Air Pump" by Shelagh Stephenson is a fairly good play that references this painting. It's about science and ethics and entertainment, and a little bit of religion.
Some idiot killing a bird made you want to be a scientist? So that you could discover earth shaking facts like creatures need air to breathe? (I will admit it is a beautifully executed painting.)
