The right wing is going to say crazier and crazier shit as they become more desperate to attract attention/momentum in this race. Six months from now this will sound like the moderate end of the GOP pool. Blah.
People like that send their daughters to Switzerland for their abortions.
To be fair, the Catholic church is very consistent on this topic. they consider life to have started at conception. By killing what they consider to be an unborn child for the reason that his father was a rapist doesn't mesh with their beliefs. I think they are WRONG in that decisions, but I applaud them for their Internal Moral Consistency
It's guys like that who make me ashamed to be from Kansas. Thank goodness I live in the one county in the state capable of logical reasoning. Hooray for Johnson County!
Well, the right wing has the same people who protest abortion clinics during the day and get abortions at night, just to protest again the next day.
It's all meaningless rhetoric.
Isn't it like totally awesome how these people are all about "protecting life," but are also pro-hatred, pro-war and pro-death penalty?
Oh what the hell, they also read the Bible and think it makes perfect sense, so asking for a little sanity is a bit much.
But Dan, you must know by now that his opinions on abortion don't apply to HIM or HIS FAMILY. Just other people and their families!
I know that this is childish and off-topic, but am I the only one who hears the name Brownback and thinks this guy can't wipe right. I mean I already think shit-stain when I read anything about him. Maybe the name makes the man.
I'm sure if Brownback's daughter were raped, he'd follow the Medieval tradition and banish her from polite society.
Does it solve the problem for the woman that’s been raped?
Yes, it does. It solves the problem of having to bear an asshole rapist's child.
The Catholics are against the death penalty, too.
I don't agree with their abortion stance, and this Brownback guy should keep his stupid mouth shut until he's been raped and gets pregnant by his rapist. Then he can tell me how he feels about it.
But it's true that the Catholics are anti-death penalty. Now if we could only account for those Crusades...
Yep. To make a statement like "we need to protect innocent life. Period," while maintaining his position as one of the most pro-war MF's out there strikes me as the height of hypocrisy. Not to mention he is utterly anti-gun control, and has supported every single effort to cut or restrict welfare. Innocent life my ass, the guy is a manipulative prick.
@3. Agreed that at least he has internal moral consistency, on the abortion issue anyways. I would be surprised if someone who was anti-abortion because they believe life begins at conception thought that abortion was okay in the case of rape. I can't think of how you would justify abortion in any instance if you believe that at any point after fertilization the fetus is a full person with full rights (Even the health of the mother... Since the two lives would be equal in status...)
Yeah, it brought me to my feet, too, as I was rushing to the bathroom to try to puke all the stupid out...
@9
But that's evil. It's a gift from God when a man rapes you and gives you a child. It would be an abhorrent and selfish action for you to kill that child. God moves in mysterious ways.
So, even if you do not believe in God, you simply must follow his rulebook. You know, the one where whales swallow men and children are killed for mocking a bald man? Yeah, that one.
Praise God!
I love that it was a Catholic Men's Conference. How cavalier and self-righteous of them. Being about a million weeks pregnant at this point, I can't imagine being forced to do this. Being pregnant has made me even more militantly pro-choice than I was already (and I didn't think that was possible). Those of us who care about this issue should also be vigilant about those "moderates" who are willing to give on things like parental notification and emergency contraception.
Pro lifers who say no abortion in case of rape are consistent about abortion only to a degree.
They are not consistent when it comes to penalties because they don't prclaim "death to the women who get abortions, their doctors, and all you liberals donating to clinics that do abortions!"
If it's a life, it's murder and we are all murderers, you see.
This inconsistency is a flaw the pro lifers should exploit; once the pro lifers are forced to admit they are not for the death penalty, they are admitting there is a distinction that let;s us pro choicers win the debate: abortion is okay.
Pro choicers kind of lack consistency when they fail to admit that there is something "special" about those little old cells that will grow into a human.
that potential is something, not nothing.
How to resolve this morally: admit that killing that potential life or human life, whatever it is, is justified.
We justify killing all the time.
Self defense. War. Self suicide.
Smokers. Pulling the plug on your spouse in the hospital. entire tobacco industry.
So no matter what the lil' mass of cells is, we can DECIDE it is okay to terminate its potential or kill it or whatever just like we have decided it is OKAY to kill in these other situations.
The only consistent position is for all of us to admit we are all moral relativists and we just decide "where to draw the line" in these situations which all involve trade offs. Absolutism is never actually practiced by the absolutists.
(If the pro lifers say they want the death penalty for all women and doctors, etc., we just win the political debate).
As outrageous as these comments are, it's fantastic that they're saying them. You may hear, "You should be grateful that your rapist, who may be your father, has given you the gift of a child," I hear, "Please buy my memoir of this primary race, which will be released two years into the presidency of whomever wins the Democratic primary."
I have to say, I don't think they treat their women well in ANY circumstance, so I don't actually think he'd blink an eye if one of his daughters was raped.
Katelyn: Seriously? Johnson County? Strip malls, gargantuan SUVs, Republicans, rampant fundamentalism, and pretense you have plenty of. But "logical reasoning"? Hardly. Read Thomas Frank's "What's the Matter with Kansas?"
Hmmm, it's possible that Jesus was the product of rape and that Mary used the "immaculate conception" excuse (and thus ruining it for every other woman with an unwanted pregnancy forever more) to keep from getting stoned to death.
Back then they were big on blamming the victim if the victim was a woman.
Mary was a professional backstreet abortionist. Word is she could remove your baby, dead or alive, from your nose!
So it is agreed, these people suck. Sometimes I wonder if the general masses of Christians (or many religions) aren't going to be satisfied until this planet is knee deep, in starving, disenfranchised, pissed off Christians who have no true place in this already crowded planet ... I guess life is sacred, until we are at war for our livelihoods and natural resources.
You know, just fuck em, I have to get back to work.
@19 -- Thank you for saying it so much better than I could.
Sam Brownback is an asshole. A girl I went to high school with was raped and murdered. Huge story, made news all over the state. That dick wanted to go to her funeral. Nice to be thinking of your own publicity instead of considering that the family and close friends of the victim might want some time to grieve.
He's not worthy of getting slogged, and yet this is the 2nd time this article has popped up on slog (was in the morning news last week, too). I'd rather read about something that's not already obvious ...
...nations that have allowed same-sex marriages were engaging in bad social experiments, with bad results.
Excuse me while I snort derisively.
And I'm just not overly impressed with Brownback's (or others') "internal moral consistency." Even if it really exists, it doesn't go very far toward redeeming views like these.
@4 Johnson County? Are you kidding me? The only liberal county in the state of Kansas is Douglas County.
Well, there are some rational people up there, but DG was the only county to outright refuse the Anti-marriage amendment put forth by the state.

If you believe that abortion is murder, then Senator Brownback is absolutely right. The issue is not how bad rape is, but whether o not abortion is ever justified.
Furthermore, I don't know what Dan's rhetorical question is supposed to prove. I could just as easily say, "Well, how would you feel if you were an aborted fetus!" Pretty lousy, I'll bet.
Actually Matt, you wouldn't feel anything as an aborted fetus, you'd be dead!!
The woman should also have to marry the rapist father, cause you don't want to deny the child the chance to be raised by both loving parents.
@27
Touché.
@28
Touché.
Makes you long for the days when a meeting of a Catholic Men's organization meant a case of Budweiser and some boobie pics.
