You say you have a bunch of great gay writers on board...
So why is Dan Savage listed?
re Crocker video:
A cupcake so sweet
Framed by curtains and blond locks
Bitter, bitter sweet
Eli, Your list of "great gay writers" (do I count 27) has hardly any chicks (do I count 4). What's up with that?
Why are you at The Stranger hatin' on all my transgender and bi friends?
Don't THEY get a cover?

Not gonna lie, we all know it, Chris Crocker is an amazing entertainer; he puts smiles on faces no matter what. Thanks so much for featuring him in The Stranger.
Thank you so much for featuring Chris Crocker. I may not be gay, but many of my friends are, and my best friend and I are often the target of slurs that don't bother us other than the fact that the names are used to be derogatory- we don't care if people think we're together, because there's no shame in it- but for people to think it should bother us is appalling. I live in the same town as Chris, and had the fortune of knowing him before the fame, and I really want to thank you for featuring him. Hopefully it will shed light on our community here in the hell hole we are stuck in, hopefully it will make an impact... but mostly, I hope it helps Chris escape, because it is too easy to be caught and trapped here, and if he can escape, he can further his efforts to make a difference. So, thank you for helping not only my town and Chris, but every town- even the ones who can't boast that they have people WILLING to make that difference, because they're the ones who need it the most, and I truly feel that Chris can change the world if given the chance.
Thank you so much for having an article on chris crocker. He is an amazing person and is completely right about the discrimination they have against gay people down south. It's completely unjust. He's correct and I love him for speaking his mind the way he does.

holy shit. is this real?
When I saw the cover, I was hoping that it was dealing with all the horrible pitfalls that can befall a young faggot now that the little bastards are coming out and dating at the age when I was still taking long, long showers after giving a furtive blowjob and hoping to scrub myself clean after proving myself to be such a dirty, dirty faggot. I'm meeting kids who are behaving like 40 year old jaded, drug addicted queens before their junior year of high school.
I wish I had a gun. I would so totally blow my fucking head off right now.
Eli, dude, what the fucking fuck?
slog = myspace.
Furthermore, Chris, could you please explain to your moron friends that they only need to hit post once? Thanks for the help.
I will explain that, if you will explain why you keep checking up on something that is clearly displasing to you.
Well, I was gonna gripe a bit that we'll have to put the paper face down in my store (assuming this week's American Apparel ad isn't too racy), but then this comment frenzy showed up. Wow.
You tell him, Chris!
I didn't realize Mr. Poe has Displasia.
It seems like they have more problems in the South in addition to homophobia.
But, his video did make me think again about how fortunate we are to have Pride week the way we do here.
Mr Crocker, don't let any of our crotchety regulars tell you different. You're a peach -- the bee's knees -- the cat's whiskers -- and your many fans, semiliterate though they may be, are absolutely welcome here. Fun stuff!
Thanks for what amounted to hundreds of spam posts- I love wading through nutjob fan comments.
Yes Chris, you're adorable.
Don't reply Ewwwwwwwuuugghhh too quickly dear. :-)
@219 Chris, great response and quite appropriate to many threads here today.
Oh, and ditto Fnarf, welcome to our little pond
I would tear his little creampie ass to shreads AND he would thank me after...
He is cute...
Correction- you wouldn't be tearing my ass up.
Not this Chris Crocker.
I'm a top.
You wouldn't be a top when you met me cutie.
You would beg for it then not be able to sit down for a week...
Please make a float next year for this very insightful gentleman. Fly him out and put him on a big giant cupcake or something. Please Dan, please!
Hey homo...you didn't happen to be named Shoshana in a previous interwebtime?
Please can we get Chris Crocker to Seattle by Sunday? He's amazing. I will chip in for airfare and hotel (seriously).
Gays make up about 2-4% of the population, but around 50% of the Stranger's editorial focus lately. What's the deal?
Roger, stick to Rhode Island and dictators (yeah I looked up your blog). No group in America is oppressed as much as the "gays" right now so I'm happy The Stranger is at the forefront of this...
Cause everyone else are bigoted christians who *gasp* believe in God.
By Jesus, we need to expose these normal people for what they really are. Normal and halfway decent.
Pooftahs, Rog old bean, every last one of them. Sodding pooftahs. Bent, bent I say. Cahn't see why we have to put up with them. Real manly men like you and me, eh, Rog?
I just couldn't resist posting comment 237. If you're still reading these, you deserve to be really, really bored.
I am still reading these at two in the morning, so I probably do.
Oh and Chris, I am a crotchety semi-regular, but I hope my flip comment didn't offend. Indeed you are the bees knees, and I would gladly call in sick and charge a plane ticket to Seattle for a long weekend if they could get you, the Pho Bang girls, and Dina Martina on the same float.
What can I say? I thought it's a pretty valid question. The phonebook sized Homo History feature? Ok, sure. Special Gay Issue(s)? Why not? Makes sense. There certainly doesn't appear to be any shortage of gay people in Seattle. Dan Savage is gay, got that, too. But surely, I'm not the only who's noticed that The Stranger (and I'm trying to put this delicately) appears to be putting in some pure crap simply because there's a gay angle, even if it comes at the detriment of something more interesting?
This fluff with Chris Crocker, for example, is beyond frivolous, leaving readers who aren't as fascinated with all things gay to wonder if The Stranger will be talking about anything else besides gay this and gay that in the foreseeable future. If there's anyone else as fascinated by the Chris Crocker's narcissism as Dan Savage and Chris Crocker appear to be, by all means, knock yourselves out. If you have to stretch this far simply to get something gay into The Stranger, however, someone's reached the point of diminishing returns.
i too love the chris crocker, and give mad props to all the chris crockers of the world, i also love wombles, and also love painting my face with split pea puree, and pooping in my swathed robes with a look of stern consternation on my face, ohhh you know that look, it's for my peeps, the magi crew from the east(side) yo....
Boring. So are theme issues; I hate them even when Vanity Fair does them (and they have good writers). NEXT!
aside from the annoying-ness that is chris crocker, and how embarrassed i am for the stranger to entertain this, what is up with these writers? most are like the same standard homos that folks trot out all the time, regurgitating their same ideas. how about some more women, or trannies? Like Leslie Feinberg or JD Samson, or someone who is actually interesting.
lolol I knew it was a Chris Crocker thread as soon a I saw the post count. You're so hot Chris, you make me wish I was a gay man instead of a straight woman so I could try to have sex with you. *sigh*
Another way to take Roger's critique is, where once people complained that The Stranger was too Capitol Hill oriented, now people complain that it is too Seattle oriented (Seattle being the second gayest city in America, for what that's worth).
I fully expect to read about Seattle because The Stranger is in Seattle. That's not the issue.
My critique is actually pretty straightforward: all gay all the time makes for dull reading, even for gays. Chris Crocker in particular is embarrassing fluff, better suited for The View than for The Stranger.
Husker Du is the greatest queer band in history.
That is all.
cluelessly wondering: is chris cocker like the new lonelygirl15?
Yes, yes, Roger, we get it. You're tired of reading about teh gays and boring boring Cris Crocker.
So explain why you have returned to this comment thread, oh, a dozen times or so over a 2 day period? No one is forcing you to read this, you know?
Despite the 200, mostly multiple duplicate, comments from the Myspace train, I liked the Crocker video. The bitchy bitter little queen has a point.
Power to Chris Crocker.
I am happy for his success and acceptance by "The Stranger". So many people seem to like Chris and show it but along with showing their love for him they put down anyone that has anything to say that is not completely "pro Chris".
Mainstream gay culture along with it's supporters tent to want a star to represent them and the self proclaimed stars in gay culture want to represent gay people everywhere and many are glad to see it. But many are tired of the constant pushing to the top of someone that has all the trappings of a perfect flamboyant celebrity, some young people that have not "come out" yet are even pushed further back into the shadows and are afraid people will think they are just like Chris Crocker when they are not. They are not flamboyant and do not want the spotlight they just want to get on with being happy without having to enter into "hyper gayspace". Some kids out there are afraid to even post on the "Slog". Some young people are empowered and some are not empowered by Chris and it is ok. If you do not fully relate to him it is ok to say so. I am happy for him but then I am happy for anyone that finds themself. What Chris has found is not what every young gay person relates to and wants to find, just some. But it is those few that speak in a louder voice than the quiet unassuming ones so they get to represent being gay when it is just all not like what Chris has become poster boy for. What about the many people that do not relate to him as being a poster boy for small the town gay boy. Chris says he has never been to a gay pride or a bath house things which seem to be defining gayness but there he is fully formed gay boy with all the trappings of a star. What about the rest that do not want to be a star, get upset when the concept of being gay in a small town is represented by a flamboyant guy like Chris. They are pushed further back and do not have much of a voice because they they are not like Chris.
Chris will be rescued in a sense, he will go on to bigger and better things and everyone will live vicariously through his journey from small town hell to the open arms of a gay community in a larger city but he is smart and has some savey but many do not and are quite lost in their small town. How many kids will be reading about him or looking at him on "You Tube" and thinking "but I am not like him, i am gay but people will think i am like Chris Crocker". Their personalities are just not the same they just do not relate and they will not get the spotlight, their lives are not spent in search of being in the spotlight just like thousands of gay people that do not relate to "rainbows or Gay Pride or anything that is supposed to define you as a gay person. The are supposed to go from "being closeted" to fully accepting a culture as it is defined today with no sense that there is an alternative way of living as a gay person. They have to journey through the trappings of established gay culture until they find the right balance and people they can relate too.
Myself I am an artist. Not a "gay artist" just an artist that happens to be gay. I do not define myself through my sexuality but at the same time am just as sexual as anyone else when I want to be. It is gay pride here in Toronto where I am visiting with a well known artist friend of who also is gay. We are off to a BBQ with more gay friends this evening and friends that are straight. The discussion of anything gay usually does not come up at dinner but I am sure it will this evening because people are "getting their pride on" in a big way here. But we are avoiding most of it and finding some other cool and interesting places to go to with great music to dance have some drinks or just sit and enjoy the visit. I do not detest gay pride and I certainly do not detest Chris Crocker and in some way to not yet associate fully the name Chris Crocker with something as forced as gay pride. He still has an innocence that has not been fully assimilated and exploited yet. But I am sure he will be big and everyone will be happy watching either a train wreck, a successful career or 15 minutes. But out there is some kid that is further back in the closet because he does not relate to the Chris Crocker character and thinks all gay culture is like him because he has so little real information to grasp onto that is even a glimmer of hope that he can exist and successfully move on being gay.
After visiting Toronto I will have had 2 gay prides under my belt (one small one in Hamilton plus Toronto) the next will be in Vancouver so If I can survive 3 then there is hope for anyone that is constantly looking for alternatives to Pride and having a great time along the way. I did not set out to follow this many gay prides they just happened to be on while I am here working/holidaying. I hope Chris is enjoying himself too.
OK, I feel fairly certain that the Stranger knows Chris Crocker is an actor supposedly with an agent and everything, like lonelygirl15, but they are playing along with their typical straight-faced sarcasm. If people look at this in a tongue in cheek or even mockingly sort of way it is not so terrible. Unfortunately, the general media does not understand the Strangerís sarcasm so I hope they donít get caught up and actually accused of being duped.
Wow, 37 instances of the word "amazing," although some are undoubtedly double and triple posts. We need to get Crocker's fans thesauruses (thesauri?).
"Gays make up about 2-4% of the population, but around 50% of the Stranger's editorial focus lately. What's the deal?"
Well Roger, as you know the gay population in Seattle is huge - much greater than 2-4%. As you know typically The Stranger is a quality paper constantly packed full of useful and interesting information. Many gays have adopted it has their own news source rather then read the only "gay paperĒ in town which provides like one local story weekly but is chocked full of national gay news and reads more like an AP Wire. Gays in Seattle have integrated so it is important that the paper is also integrated with the rich vibrant artistic culture that is Seattle. Take away the straight angle and the Stranger and it is no longer as interesting to most gays in Seattle. Take away the gay angle and believe me you would not have the same newspaper. There is a lot written on a daily basis so take in what interests you.
I say, old Rog -- I hope you don't mind if I call you thet, old bean, it's just -- well, you seem like SUCH a nice fellow, I feel as if I've known you for AGES, you see -- it's awffly, AWffly good of you to step in here and try to, you know, sort of SORT OUT these degenerates. One simply CAHN'T carry on the struggle oneself, can one? No. I DO think you're AWffly brave, my dear chap. I'm sure you know how it is, as it were; the, er, inmates are rather running the asylum, don't you think? No moral standards anywhere, I'm afraid, old chap. And these PERverts, well, I'm sure you can imagine what it must be like. Oh, I try, I try; I'm sure you understand, Rog, dear; stiff upper lip and all that. You know QUITE all about it, I'm sure. I'm sure you feel the way I do about this, I can tell, you see. I know it's HARD, Rog old fellow, to keep one's "pecker up" so to speak, as they say, et cetera et cetera, in the, er, FACE of all this adversity, yes, yes. But don't let me interrupt you, oh, now, my good man, oh no -- just a few words of encouragement and I'll leave you to it. Good show, though! Bully for you! Bully for old Rog, I say, giving all these DREADful homoSECKshewels a bit of what they've got coming to them. Oh, I say. Hear, hear. Carry on!
So many words!
Um, is anyone commenting on the actual pieces in the gay history article? They're all very good, and definitely convey what those years felt like, but I have two objections. Where the hell are Ryan White and Matthew Shepard? There's a brief mention of Shepard in the 2000 "Aravosis is great, really great" piece, and not a word about Ryan White in any of the AIDS coverage that I could find. What the hell were the writers and editors thinking, not covering those two people and the HUGE social change that resulted from their lives and stories?
What is with the Chris Crocker deluge for an hour and a half? That's it? WTF? Do any of you Chris supporters even care to take him to another level? Chris, in my opinion, your "friends" leave a lot to be desired. That aside, thank you "Stranger" for the queer edition. The 1981 segment was relevant to me as that is the year that I came out. GRID was very much part of my experience. I thought "I've been in the closet all of my life, and now I have to be afraid of THIS? Does God hate me? I don't think so but, still...
