I may not be gay, but many of my friends are, and my best friend and I are often the target of slurs that don't bother us other than the fact that the names are used to be derogatory- we don't care if people think we're together, because there's no shame in it- but for people to think it should bother us is appalling. I live in the same town as Chris, and had the fortune of knowing him before the fame, and I really want to thank you for featuring him. Hopefully it will shed light on our community here in the hell hole we are stuck in, hopefully it will make an impact... but mostly, I hope it helps Chris escape, because it is too easy to be caught and trapped here, and if he can escape, he can further his efforts to make a difference. I am happy for his success and acceptance by "The Stranger". So many people seem to like Chris and show it but along with showing their love for him they put down anyone that has anything to say that is not completely "pro Chris".
Mainstream gay culture along with it's supporters tent to want a star to represent them and the self proclaimed stars in gay culture want to represent gay people everywhere and many are glad to see it. But many are tired of the constant pushing to the top of someone that has all the trappings of a perfect flamboyant celebrity, some young people that have not "come out" yet are even pushed further back into the shadows and are afraid people will think they are just like Chris Crocker when they are not. They are not flamboyant and do not want the spotlight they just want to get on with being happy without having to enter into "hyper gayspace". Some kids out there are afraid to even post on the "Slog". Some young people are empowered and some are not empowered by Chris and it is ok. If you do not fully relate to him it is ok to say so. I am happy for him but then I am happy for anyone that finds themself. What Chris has found is not what every young gay person relates to and wants to find, just some. But it is those few that speak in a louder voice than the quiet unassuming ones so they get to represent being gay when it is just all not like what Chris has become poster boy for. What about the many people that do not relate to him as being a poster boy for small the town gay boy. Chris says he has never been to a gay pride or a bath house things which seem to be defining gayness but there he is fully formed gay boy with all the trappings of a star. What about the rest that do not want to be a star, get upset when the concept of being gay in a small town is represented by a flamboyant guy like Chris. They are pushed further back and do not have much of a voice because they they are not like Chris.
Chris will be rescued in a sense, he will go on to bigger and better things and everyone will live vicariously through his journey from small town hell to the open arms of a gay community in a larger city but he is smart and has some savey but many do not and are quite lost in their small town. How many kids will be reading about him or looking at him on "You Tube" and thinking "but I am not like him, i am gay but people will think i am like Chris Crocker". Their personalities are just not the same they just do not relate and they will not get the spotlight, their lives are not spent in search of being in the spotlight just like thousands of gay people that do not relate to "rainbows or Gay Pride or anything that is supposed to define you as a gay person. The are supposed to go from "being closeted" to fully accepting a culture as it is defined today with no sense that there is an alternative way of living as a gay person. They have to journey through the trappings of established gay culture until they find the right balance and people they can relate too.
Myself I am an artist. Not a "gay artist" just an artist that happens to be gay. I do not define myself through my sexuality but at the same time am just as sexual as anyone else when I want to be. It is gay pride here in Toronto where I am visiting with a well known artist friend of who also is gay. We are off to a BBQ with more gay friends this evening and friends that are straight. The discussion of anything gay usually does not come up at dinner but I am sure it will this evening because people are "getting their pride on" in a big way here. But we are avoiding most of it and finding some other cool and interesting places to go to with great music to dance have some drinks or just sit and enjoy the visit. I do not detest gay pride and I certainly do not detest Chris Crocker and in some way to not yet associate fully the name Chris Crocker with something as forced as gay pride. He still has an innocence that has not been fully assimilated and exploited yet. But I am sure he will be big and everyone will be happy watching either a train wreck, a successful career or 15 minutes. But out there is some kid that is further back in the closet because he does not relate to the Chris Crocker character and thinks all gay culture is like him because he has so little real information to grasp onto that is even a glimmer of hope that he can exist and successfully move on being gay.
After visiting Toronto I will have had 2 gay prides under my belt (one small one in Hamilton plus Toronto) the next will be in Vancouver so If I can survive 3 then there is hope for anyone that is constantly looking for alternatives to Pride and having a great time along the way. I did not set out to follow this many gay prides they just happened to be on while I am here working/holidaying. I hope Chris is enjoying himself too.

Well Roger, as you know the gay population in Seattle is huge - much greater than 2-4%. As you know typically The Stranger is a quality paper constantly packed full of useful and interesting information. Many gays have adopted it has their own news source rather then read the only "gay paper” in town which provides like one local story weekly but is chocked full of national gay news and reads more like an AP Wire. Gays in Seattle have integrated so it is important that the paper is also integrated with the rich vibrant artistic culture that is Seattle. Take away the straight angle and the Stranger and it is no longer as interesting to most gays in Seattle. Take away the gay angle and believe me you would not have the same newspaper. There is a lot written on a daily basis so take in what interests you.

There's a brief mention of Shepard in the 2000 "Aravosis is great, really great" piece, and not a word about Ryan White in any of the AIDS coverage that I could find. What the hell were the writers and editors thinking, not covering those two people and the HUGE social change that resulted from their lives and stories?
