Given my pedantic nature today, there must have always been some OCD in me. I loved highways and traffic systems, road maps and street grids. One of the biggest thrills in my young life was actually going for a ride and getting to ride on the freeway in Las Vegas. Of course, this was back in the 80's, when Vegas... But yeah, Seattleites who complain about traffic are nuts. They're on the wrong street, is all. Vegas is indeed a freakshow of gridlocked eight-lane streets, and there are others like it throughout the Southwest.

I liked this post a lot - I grew up with the same love of the open road, and my biggest regret about not having a car is not being able to just pick up and drive to nonwhere in particular in the middle of the night. Not very environmentally conscious, I know, but there ya go.

I get really frustrated by Metro sometimes, and think there are lots of ways public transportation here could be improved, but I have had no problem living without a car in Seattle for the last 16+ years.

They are delightfully open roads during daylight, while the cops unfold the morning paper at home. Traffic sucks here, but it's mainly Rush Hour Traffic.
