Oy fucking vey.
Maybe they wanted to make up for no one's asking Al Gore if he was running?
Yep. I think she thought she was being clever, kind of tongue-in-cheek, but it just came off as being stupid. Hosseini, gracious man that he is, politely told the lady he has no idea.
Are we in fucking texas now?
sounds fucking funny to me. at least as useful as asking Gore if he's running.
No. FUCKING. Way.
Fuck, this is not some crazy nightmare...
Obviously someone trying to keep that audience from being ridiculed by you Dan for not having asked a Town Hall speaker the stupidest, most useless question possible.
I don't know what people's stories are. Some are having a bad day. Some maybe missed out on a proper education through no fault of their own. Some, I guess, are just missing the thoughtful gene. But after reading this and after a recent trip to the QFC at Broadway and Pike (to which I'll never return), I can say without reservation that there sure are some crass, self-absorbed motherfuckers here in Seattle. Do we have more than our fair share here? It sometimes seems so.
Don't be a tease!
You MUST share your reasons for never going to that QFC again!
I meant to ask him if he had some process for writing.
I once heard a tenured professor (a PhD!) ask our guest speaker, a notable Indian psychoanalyst who was there to discuss religion and violence, if she needed to stop her pre-pubescent sons from giving each other blowjobs in the bathtub! She didn't want to "inhibit their sexual experimentation" (never mind that they were experimenting with incest!). He, too, managed to politely avoid the question--but it does make you wonder if these people got hold of some bad acid in their younger days...
If any of you here have attended a SIFF screening with Q&A following with the director, star, or someone else involved with the film, this thread should not surprise anyone...I cringe, cringe!, and slouch down in my seat during Q&A because there is always some nut who asks some off-the-wall question and thoroughly embarrasses everyone in the theater. The one that took the prize was someone asking a director how it was for her directing a film that had a number of african-american themes, when she was a white woman. Umm, the director was clearly african american. The questioner was sitting in the 3rd row and could not discern this. Thankfully the director passed acted very graciously by saying, "I'm not white....but I can tell you what it was like directing the film as a woman..." The nutsos are everywhere...
At SIFF, there's always the inappropriate laughing from the audiences too. For a city with such a PC reputation, there's a large contigent who finds the most mundane or tragic aspects of life and culture in other countries uncontrollably funny. Hah hah, people in African villages don't have plumbing! Its cold in Scandinavia during winter, what a knee slapper!
This was the first time I was EMBARRASED to live in Seattle. Hosseini is never coming back here.
bad humour / poor taste.
at siff last night someone asked the director if being abused as a child makes you a homosexual. i certainly wanted to hide. worse still was the follow-up lecture given by another theatre goer under the guise of a question...
so i purposely asked a softball question immediately afterwards.
I don't understand why anyone sticks around for the Q&As--they are invariably hijacked by severe nut jobs. I always, *always* duck out when whoever is finished speaking.
There's no way that Seattle has more than its share of crass assholes. The assholes just stand out more because most Seattlites are non-confrontational sheep. The behavior of those assholes only worsens as their neighbors, peers, and friends refuse to call them out on it.
Osama is in Pakistan.
I blame Stephen Colbert. I'm sure this person would be just as much of a clueless jackass without him, but this particular style of assjackery is Colbert's influence.
