My Motherland

posted by on June 5 at 16:03 PM

Even to this day, I can find no quick way around this image:
B00005R1Q5.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg It’s the cover for Natalie Merchant’s 2001 album Motherland. What kind of power is this? It’s a power that is opposite that of the ascetic. And as the rich once admired the ascetic’s power of nothingness, of restraint, of absolute self-control, here we admire Merchant’s power of abundance, of unrestrained production. The production of milk, of life, of the universe. Here in this moment under the tree she is pure positivity.

Seriously, Charles, your thing with women is disturbing. Go back to architecture.

We already know he doesn't like pregnant women. Or at least having sex with pregnant women (horses yes).

I kid.

Thank God her ample breasts aren't accompanied by a pregnant belly. Otherwise you would have to go and do a barf, right?

i agree with charles. i've always found that cover disturbing. i've always found her music unbearable, yet i am forced to think "nice rack" by a photo with about zero sex appeal. a photo of a mom on an album who's title evokes fascism.

I get more of natural fertility from this picture, not the soulless production of Max Weber, but rather Demeter and female goddesses of reproduction

We should organize a movement to bombard Mudede's e-mail with pictures of pregnant porn

Have to agree about what they said, Charles.

But I like how she has both hips and mammary glands in reasonable proportion, too.

Appears to be a problem with the posting time on this piece. I'm guessing it was 4:20; otherwise, whoa! Will 15 minutes a day of listening to Carnival really render a man sterile or is that an urban myth?

As long as she sits there and doesn't sing, I'm fine.

@11
just downloaded Carnival, neat song, video is great I remember, cool Tai-Chi segment, great guitar work-- what a weird and provocative question you ask

Thanks Chuck! Awesome cast on Motherland- Seattleite Matt Chamberlain, Joe Jackson's bass player, T-Bone Burnett, and a song about....Henry Darger! I Gotta Have it!

good god Mudede. Yes, yes, we all know that you are hyperintelligent. Please, just *say* it - nice tits, Natalie. There, now, doesn't that feel better to just say what you feel?

@ 9, I thought about posting some in the comments of his "I won't see 'Knocked Up' " post but didn't want to spend the time trying to find a porn page that would allow you to see the source (a key requirement for my elementary HTML skills).

it's not the opposite of ascetic. it IS ascetic. im sure the blogger is a great guy, but truly smart people don't have to go on thesaurus.com to try and prove their worth.

4 June 2007

After the storm, my mind cleared.

And a high wind arose and blew the tropics north.

running quartz crystals through a blender.

sand through your engines.

bubbles in your bays.

estuaries reaching out toward forbidden seas...

sand through your eyes.

5 June 2007

Calm as baby's breath

as peaceful as the storm's eye

Clouds spread and drawn with rough strokes of stratospheric winds

a warm and windy tropical day.

7 June 2007

Black water at dusk.

Lighting on the horizon.

Warm winds coming in across the darkening waters.

A flash of white wings as an egret takes flight.

And Thunder like God clearing his throat.

8 June 2007

Morning star in the still of the clear, dark waters.

a sky as clear eyed as a young girl.

bruised and tattered storm remnants limp off in the gathering light.

9 June 2007

Tickled her fancy.

giggling all the day long.

pretty good for a Saturday.

Clouds on the lake floating aimlessly by.

She smiled big--grinned really.
