Just when Nick seemed to be losing cred because of his weird stance on the viaduct and such, he comes out firing. Nick is doing what the council should have been doing for years - standing up against the incredibly corrupted SPD oversight process. The SPD is the single most influential group in City politics, they investigate themselves, and cops are rarely if ever disciplined because of it. The oversight process is a joke, and the Chiefs interference in this investigation is just the tip of the iceberg. Thank God Nick is there to stand up for the people.
Now if Ceis and Nickels want to prove they are on the side of strong ethics, they will support Nick's proposal for council oversight and independent civilian oversight of the SPD and SFD. Anything short of that makes them look complicate in the shortcomings and obviously corrupted process we currently have.
But in Nickels case I guess we'll see if the old adage about how the far apple falls from the tree is true or not. I guess, not that far.
Worse than the fact that the OPARB report documents Chief K systematically manipulating the OPA investigation is that he admitted to the Seattle Times that this wasn't unusual for him:
In response to the findings, Kerlikowske said, "If it's about intervening in a case, I've been involved in a number of them, all high-profile cases with serious allegations so it's not that uncommon." "It's not at all uncommon for me to be briefed and get involved and provide direction on a case."
The man has got to go.
It's in the Times...before it's in the Stranger.
Lolz @ 3.
Isn't Kerlikowske also the Chief who ordered his cops to stand by and watch while someone was beat to death during the Mardi Gras riots?
Time for oversight, and change. If the Mayor won't or can't stand up to the SPD, it's time the Council does it.
@3 &4,
That's the whole point. That's why I cited and linked the Seattle Times. See, we cite other papers when... oh, never mind.
where. oh where have all the Elliot Ness' of the world gone?
I'm shocked that they're even moving to go after Gil Kerlikowske. Usually, the city's let the SPD slide on just about every transgression. While I hold out hope that this leads to some shitcannings, I'm not confident that this will lead to anything more than yet another slap on the wrist and continuation of blatant racism from the racist junta.
Hey if you wonder if Kerlikowske was the top cop standing by in the Mardi Gras riot, try using my facilities, don't clutter up this thread with your questoins. (Here's how to do it: type my name in your computer, push go, then enter Seattle Mardi Gras murder and hit enter again. Then you have to read a few entries.)
You're welcome.
Kerlikowske has to go.
Nickels has to go unless he fires him.
No tolerance for corrupt cops including the corruption of interfering with the investigation.
And guess what those cops aren't going to sue the city for defamation because the report is true. The "fear of liability" excuse was part of a COVER UP.
@10: I think you're right, though I do think that the union's fear (in general, not in this case) that good cops will have their names dragged through the mud even when they are exonerated should be addressed respectfully. That said, Kerlikowske has no ground to stand on if he complains about the leak, since the PI reported yesterday:
Kerlikowske said he would be "happy to see this report become public" and found it "distasteful" that the review board chose to withhold its release pending the Law Department review.
#10:
Okay, I hereby respect the "general fear (not in this case) that good cops will have their names dragged through the mud."
Want to really respect that fear? Release the reports. Whether true or false. If they lie, the cops can sue. Get money. That's real respect.
Ph and I hereby apologize further to all people who not disagreeing with my actual points fear that someone, somewhere, may potentially feel a lack of respect if someone else, somewhere, misunderstands my remarks. Expecially the passive agressive types who write in not disagreeing with me in this particular case. Everyone is worthy. Love and peace to all. In any case, not this particular case alone.
