Harsh.
Isn't there an obvious angle to this that should be addressed (to explain whether it was a factor or not)?
Let's see...Rivas Morales....a crowd at Juneteenth...in Texas....
Wow.
Too bad they weren't on bikes.
Now, now, it's not like Texas fought for it's independence to preserve slavery or anything ...
oh ... wait ... um, never mind ...
Good god. 20 or 30 people beating down on one guy, who hadn't even been driving a car that didn't even seriously hurt someone? This is scary shit.
$20 that Lou Dobbs suggests he had it coming to him.
OK, only one of you even vaguely mentioned what I was talking about.
Let's just not talk about it. Its not PC. Sorry for thinking those thoughts.
Lo siento mucho &
Que barbaridad,
I believe this would qualify as a lynching.
UnPC... that was my first thought. Other articles confirm that the guy who was killed was Hispanic, but none of them have mentioned anything about the crowd. This is pretty crazy...
its not crazy at all. humans, ALL humans, are the most horrible of great apes: ignorant, impulsive, tribal & violent.
expect to see MUCH more of this when the oil is gone.
Yeah, where is the racial angle? A bunch of black guys beat the crap out of a Mexican and no one is pointing this out?
Speaking of Texas. I was at the gym yesterday wearing my orange work out shirt and someone asked me if it was a Texas Longhorn shirt (I said it was from The North Face) and that I would rather have a chain saw shoved up my butt then my brains blown out before I would own anything knowingly made or from Texas.
It took two and a half years for news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas?!
I don't even know how to process that. I feel sick.
Whoever unPC is, I see where that point's going and I gotta agree: I bet the mob was white, and if the guy wasn't Latino, and the girl who was hit wasn't a 4 year old girl, he probably wouldn't have been beaten to death.
Yesterday, I'm walking home along 45th in the U District, and come up to a red light at an intersection with an outletting one way street. The one-way means you cannot turn onto the cross street I'm waiting to cross.
The light turns green with the walk signal, and as I'm about to cross, this vato in a green car, in the very front of the right lane... who had sat there the entire time the light was red, quickly flips his signal as the light changes and immediately cuts in front of me at a relatively high speed.
It was a shock because I wasn't looking for him, obviously. He was stopped at the front of the intersection with the red light the entire time, his signal wasn't on, and to turn at all would've meant going the WRONG WAY down the one way street. Literally every possible indication showed that there's absolutely no way he turns, except to be a complete fucking prick.
Flipping the turn signal was nothing more than an alibi if a cop (haha) happened to be in the area and stopped him; then he could just say he properly signaled (like anyone other than the guy he tried to hit was watching or cared), and he didn't know the street was one-way.
He totally knew what he was doing. And I'm sure this will lead to someone getting run over in a hit and run one day, and then you assholes will go off about how the victim should've watched where he/she was going, how drivers talk on their cell phones too much, etc., without realizing this sort of thing may be a pure premeditated act of malice by the motorist.
... meanwhile, this incident in the original entry was not, and it's ridiculous that this reaction, maybe justifiable in some cases, was totally uncalled for, and towards the wrong person, yet it happened.
Hate crime? Austin? Houston would not have surprised me. Unfortunately a lot of cities have a lot of tensions and hate crimes involving Latinos vs Blacks (LA Miami) Blacks vs Latinos (DC, Compton) Austin surprises me.
Why? UTA is there.
"I bet the mob was white, and if the guy wasn't Latino, and the girl who was hit wasn't a 4 year old girl, he probably wouldn't have been beaten to death."
@14, Gomez, do you think it was a white crowd in Texas at a Juneteenth celebration? Do you know what Juneteenth is? You've been on a real roll with your "facts" regarding the size of various cities of late--might as well bring the same fastidiousness and intelligence to social issues.
Oh, so you know the demographics of everyone that was involved in the attacks, sock puppet? Sweet. Enlighten us, and be sure to link a source.
Isn't Juneteenth the day before Junetwentieth? You know, the one when everyone got 40 acres and a mole?
I thought that everyone knew that a black mob beating a brown man to death in the street in front of his house in broad daylight is the traditional way to celebrate Juneteenth...
Gomez,
Here's a link.
It doesn't specify the attackers as African American, but I doubt the African-American community would be making public statements if the attackers were white.
And, unless the attackers were some sort of racist counter-protestors or something, I'm not certain what a "mob"/large group of white men would be doing at a Juneteenth celebration.
@20,
Hello? The tradition is to beat a white man. Duh.
Gomez, you're the one who said "i bet the mob was white." But since you couldn't infer from the fact that it was a Juneteenth celebration in Texas, here are a couple quotes and links (the spam filter prevents me from posting more) to cram through your thick skull:
While Morales is Hispanic and his attackers were black, police said they don't believe the attack was racially motivated.
"This wasn't a hate crime," Piatt said. "This wasn't a racist crime. There is absolutely no reason to think race had anything to do with this."

Police say Morales was a passenger in a car that hit a small child. Witnesses told police that several black males then started to assault the driver. They told police the crowd then started beating Morales when he got out of the car to try to stop the fight.
