Slog - Comments on Slog, Meet iPhone

I feel pretty safe in saying that this is the first Slog post written on an iPhone. I'd recount the hilarious story of how I came to have this phone, but it's too damn hard to type on this crazy keyboard. Learning curve aside, this thing is fucking cool....

Comment by Brandon H

I waited for 10 hours in Olympia for one thinking they would sell out and I gotta say the iPhone is badass. The keyboard works surprisingly well, especially compared to using the number pad on my old phone. It does help if you just trust it and not look at what you type (it's not easy though) and then recheck your text and edit with the magnifying glass (videos are at the apple website). My only problem is that you have to hit a button to access the period on another page rather than having it right there with the letters. And the P and O keys are finicky. Did Dan Savage get his iPhone or did he decide on the Razr?

Comment by Mr. Designer

*crying* I was hoping SLOG would stay iPhone free. Every 5th article on my RSS feeds are about the iPhone....which is still better than reading about Paris Hilton. Since I can't stand cell phones and enjoy talking on my 1978 princess phone that is plugged into a wall and has a chord I won't be buying an iPhone (electronic iLeash) anytime soon. It is sexy though and has a beautiful interface. Does the glass get greasy?

As an interactive designer, I am excited that the Safari browser is now on 3 different platforms, PC, Mac and the iPhone. I'm glad the websites I work on will actually look good on at least one mobile device.

Comment by Anthony Hecht

Fnarf, I've had AT&T/Cingular service for a couple years and never had any particularly serious problems. Certainly no more problems than I and others have with every other carrier I know of. I'm not a great fan of some of their business practices, but my application for sainthood was permanently rejected years ago anyway (unlike some other angels of sweetness and light in this thread).

Comment by AT&T SUCKS

A few years ago (I'm still pissed) I had AT&T Expedia broadband. The only way they would accept payment was through debiting your credit card or checking account. One wedensday they debited my account, the next day they closed my account for non-payment. I will spare you my tale of hours on the phone on hold, and so on and on and on. There are plenty of big companies out there who give crummy service. AT&T ranks in the worst of them.
If AT&T was giving away IPhones with a signup I wouldn't do it.

Comment by MORE AT&T SUCKS

The phone and the network: I've long labored under miserable AT&T mobile service using lesser phones; now I can get unsatisfactory mobile service on my iPhone! Throughout San Francisco, AT&T signal strength varies wildly from place to place and from second to second. The first call I made on the iPhone dropped out briefly -- I was ordering take-out and had to repeat my order.

But you've got no choice. Apple has chosen AT&T as the iPhone's exclusive network provider. This week Working Assets, the phone company whose mission is to do well by doing good, put out a petition urging Steve Jobs to "unlock" the iPhone -- that is, to let people use it on any provider they choose. People ought to have the right to choose whatever device they'd like to use on whatever network, Working Assets argues. And if you're going to get stuck with a network, AT&T would likely come up last in your list. Here's a company that is currently fighting network neutrality, helping the NSA spy on Americans, and developing a way for Hollywood to police the Internet. As Cory Doctorow asks, "Honestly, is there anyone who believes that having a captive audience of two-year-locked iPhone customers will incentivize AT&T to behave better?"
