Its silly to argue that the passage of gay rights laws means that religious leaders would no longer be able to speak out against homosexuality. There is a difference between quoting Leviticus 18:22 and advocating the murder of gay people. The Christian Right's martyr complex makes me laugh and cry everytime I read about it.

Is there any update on his attempt to roll back the anti-discrimination law? Is he close to getting enough signatures? I haven't heard much about it since he filed his initiative.

Those fair-weather friends of the U.S. Constitution - the Christian Right - are in a lather this month over the proposed "Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007" (H.R. 1592 / S. 1105) before Congress. An "Action Alert" sent out by the American Family Association warns the bill "would criminalise negative comments concerning homosexuality, such as calling the practice of homosexuality a sin from the pulpit, a "hate crime" punishable by a hefty fine and time in prison. This dangerous legislation would take away our freedom of speech and our freedom of religion."

Naturally, the proposed law does no such thing. The bill has nothing to do with the issue of speech; it deals with prescribing criminal penalties for bodily injury to others willfully inflicted.

Unfortunately for the discussion points of Hutcherson's 'High Impact Leadership Coalition' (also known as the Chubby Black Preacher Group) the dreaded piece of legislation (House version passed on 5/3/07) goes so far as to include the following clause:

"Nothing in this Act, or the amendments made by this Act, shall be construed to prohibit any expressive conduct protected from legal prohibition by, or any activities protected by the free speech or free exercise clauses of, the First Amendment to the Constitution."

Oops.

Religion is already covered by the current law. So lets try a little experiment.

CHRISTIANITY'S FOR IDIOTS AND ISLAM'S FOR LOSERS AND NO ONE TAKES IT UP THE ASS LIKE A BUDDHIST

Waiting... Waiting.... Waiting... No FBI, guess I'm safe. Whew that was close.

If you're talking about Sullivan you're completely right. I'm starting to believe that Sullivan is Marx to Dan Savage's (and staff's) Lenin.
