Isn't that employment discrimination based on religion? (in other words: illegal)

Posted by ky | June 7, 2007 8:33 AM

yes, this sounds very illegal - I think this is why craigslist got sued.

If the museum is owned by a "faith based organization" I believe the courts have already said they can legally discriminate against other religions (or lack there of).

Elswinger, courts have ruled that faith based organizations can only discriminate if the religious requirement is necessary to do the job, so no, you don't have to hire a Jesus freak to be the hazzan at Yom Kippur services, but in my experience, the best baristas aren't the ones that worship Jesus, but men who worship cock.

Clearly you've never been to TNT on Broadway and Harrison. Those rug munchers make a damn fine mocha.

Gitai, IIRC though, this museum is run by private funds, so it's not a faith based organization like Salvation Army.

Dinosaur... milk.... somebody call Carl Everett!

Now they're just trying to be stupid for show. The apocalypse, or the Chinese annexation of the US (whichever comes first), can't come soon enough.

We shouldn't really make fun of these guys yet, creationsism is so retarded that I believe their theories will keep getting even more bizzarre. I want to see what they will so next. These guys make the Heavens Gate cult not seem so bad.

@12

Private funding doesn't really bear on the matter one way or the other. Depending on the state, though, there are sometimes exemptions from non-discrimination policies that depend on the total number of employees. A small business with 9 or fewer employees might be able to discriminate to their hearts' content, for example.

It's nice to know people were making Lattes during the Triassic/Jurassic Period. Maybe we should cannonize the Flintstones.

@16

There are actually exemptions made for religious corporations in the Civil Rights Act. IANAL, but if I read this right, they're covered:

(a) This subchapter shall not apply to an employer with respect to the employment of aliens outside any State, or to a religious corporation, association, educational institution, or society with respect to the employment of individuals of a particular religion to perform work connected with the carrying on by such corporation, association, educational institution, or society of its activities.
