At least they got an announcement. I traveled by train once... the damn thing would stop, in the middle of Buttfuck Nowhere, for no gawddamn reason, and stay stopped for an hour or two. And none of the attendants or conductors would know why. What? Can't the engineer communicate with the crew?

I was on one of the big trains from Portland to Seattle once. Since they start in LA (I think) they are always hours late by the time they get to Portland, so we were already looking at an 10pm arrival time.

Going through Federal Way the train suddenly stopped. A few minutes later police cars and ambulances arrived. About an hour later we began getting confirmation that the train had hit someone. Then we got to watch one of the emergency response guys pull out a huge 100 yard tape and presumably measure the distance the body traveled, or was pushed, or the distance between body parts. Not really sure.

I think we got to Seattle at 3am.

Ugh. It was either a suicide or a moron. No one else would walk railroad tracks.

And pity the poor people on the train. It takes FOREVER for the authorities to do the investigation.

I was waiting for the 508 train, but it was held up by the 507. An extra hour of Oly (or maybe it's Lacey)

I don't see how it could be an iPod issue. I used to live right next to railroad tracks and there's no way you can not notice the earth shaking as they pass.

The person I feel bad for in these situations is the engineer. Try as much as he/she might, there's no way to stop the train in time, and they have a front row seat to the death. If it's a car or large truck on the tracks, there's a good chance they will end up dead themselves.
