Closing Gitmo

posted by on June 22 at 9:04 AM

Maybe not.

Sorry, false alarm.

A major meeting was to take place today amongst the president’s national security and legal advisers, the AP reported late yesterday; and the closing of Guantanamo Bay detention facility was on the table. And “for the first time, it appears a consensus is developing, senior administration officials said Thursday.”

That story broke around 6 PM last night. By 8 PM, the story had changed: there was no meeting, the White House said, and “no decisions on the future of Guantanamo Bay are imminent.”

What happened? The Washington Post reports this morning that there really was supposed to be such a meeting. But “two administration officials” say that once word broke about the subject, and the apparent “consensus” that had been developing towards closing the facility, Gitmo was pulled off the table.

And who pulled it off the table? Who do you think?

We close the base, and then what? What do you do with these ghosts. I suppose you give them a trial, and then what? There have GOT to be smarter people out there that have a decent solution while sticking them American values (whether they like them or not.)

Ah. Makes sense.

When I first read that they were considering closing Guantanamo, my jaw nearly hit the floor. Seriously. Since when has the Bush administration reversed course on any decision, no matter how ill conceived? Bush has fought tooth and nail for years to keep the prisoners indefinitely with no trial of any kind. I just couldn't imagine Bush closing Guantanamo. He'd have to either (A) release all the prisoners or (B) move them to the US somewhere which would give them full access to the US court system. What are the chances of Bush (or Cheney) being willing to allow either of those options?

Face it. Without drastic intervention by the Supreme Court, Guantanamo is not going to be closing until sometime after Bush/Cheney leave office.

Interesting read in the LA Times this morning about the slick VP. He thinks he's above the law. We all knew this, but now there's proof!

I am focusing my mental powers on giving Dick Cheney a massive painful coronary. Right...now...

Darth Cheney - only you could be so bold.

The Imperial Senate will not sit still for this! When they hear that… oh who are we kidding? They're not gonna do jack. Nevermind.

The question of what to do with them now would be a lot easier to handle if this had never happened. It didn't need to happen; most of them aren't guilty of anything at all, except having a personal enemy down the block who ratted them out as "oh, yeah, terrorist, very bad man, take him, yeah, that's the guy". That's all the evidence you need to hold a man for five years incommunicado. Yes, dealing with them now, or eventually is going to be difficult.

That's the problem with committing horrible crimes like this: hard to put the egg back together again.

I think we should put Cheney in there and let HIM think, until he comes up with a solution to this conundrum that is acceptable to everyone. As soon as your idea gets 100% of the vote, Dick, you're staying put. More lice?

You lefties didn't seriously think they were gonna close Gitmo, did you?

Whoever started that rumor is either a left-wing retard, or one really clever right-wing operate (knowing that it would get shot down once word got out).
