Slog - Comments on Clinton's Campaign Song

People are cooing over the video the Hillary Clinton campaign released today announcing the pick of her campaign song. After a process to pick the song that was basically viral-video meets American Idol, Clinton chose Celine Dion's "You and I." Um. But check out the funny Sopranos-based video she used to announce the pick, after weeks of online voting. As The New York Times says: This video, by far, represents the best campaign spot we’ve seen this season - yes it is still early. But it’s so good that the winning song becomes anticlimactic....

no, no, no. I refuse to believe that the Clintons or, more accurately, their advisors, would allow them to pick a Celine Dion song for the campaign. that has to be as much of a false re-direct as the lame Smashmouth comment from Bill. If it's true, she loses my vote.

I was horrified at this song. I am no campaign manager, but honestly when picking a song that most Americans would like/identify with you should pick a song from the following:

1) Beatles
2) Elvis
3) Rolling Stones
4) Fleetwood Mac (for a female vocalist, if that is what she was going for)

I mean come ON! Seriously. How much is she paying her consultants?!?! I don't need a masters degree and a 6 figure paycheck to figure out a good song.

Shit, Tim McGraw or Faith Hill would have been better. Yeesh. Or at least something that is CATCHY.

Hey all y'all Hillary is not running to be president of Capitol Hill. The USA has this weird thing called the electoral college. She has to win in places like Ohio West Virginia Tennessee
New Mexico Louisiana & Iowa.

I don't know shit from shinola about Celine but I do know whatever y'all like up there in Seattle probably ain't what they like in these other places. Gotta go, gotta write my memo on the lead we have in congressional races (it's looking real good for 08 as long as we keep you activists satisfied with periodic "bursts" of legislative efforts on Iraq)--

Comment by NoamChomsky

The next presidential election is shaping up to be the biggest piece of shit forced on us yet. Hillary Clinton won't do anything for this country (except maybe the folks in Hollywood).

Republican candidate, "what's his name" doesn't even "believe" in evolution, and supports a war that apparently has something to do with terrorism. I've yet to hear one Republican candidate speak out against Haliburtan no-bid contracts, or the fact I'm more likely to die by a lightning strike than at the hands of terrorists. Who's working on that lightning threat?

My only hope is that a national repulsion engulfs the electorate and somehow some random-fuck third party candidate is elected. Honestly, "ineffective chaos" is probably the best state for the federal government to be in. At least it would let us get on with our lives and avoid being treated like terrorists every time we step on to an airplane or make a phone call.

My vote is going to either the first candidate to pledge to eliminate federal income tax (with no national sales tax as a replacement), or to whomever I believe will be most ineffectual in office.

Disband the federal government and it's military, let the bible thumpers all move to the south or midwest and teach how dinosaurs were on Noah's Ark, and leave the northwest the fuck alone.

If the citizens of the northwest had the money they give to the IRS, I think we could build a better society than the homogenized crap forced on us by that other Washington.

Oh, and Celine Dion sucks (and probably not very well).

why do people like this video (including bill o'reilly tonight!)? she looks even more robot-like that usual, which is saying a lot. the whole thing is just shows how desperate her campaign is to liven up her image. i give them credit for trying, but soon, the story is going to become more of a meta-narrative about how hard her handlers are trying to humanize her rather than her campaign itself and the issues she's trying to raise.

al gore was cast the same way, but he didn't go so far as hillary to defuse the situation. a better parallel is john kerry and the whole flip-flip and swift boat attacks. he soon spent all his time trying to diffuse fictitious perceptions about him, rather than spread his real messages.
