An Educated Guess

I kind of think the Secret Festival screening this weekend will be Michael Moore’s Sicko.

Good. Now we can avoid it.

When will someone break the silence and tell us what was shown in the past? Based on the two films I saw 15 years ago I suspect nothing good or important are ever shown at the Secret Festival.

well I saw reseveoir dogs at the secret festival i attended back in the day..15 years ago to be exact. and let me tell you it remains one of the most signifigant experiances i've had in a theater.. i mean really can you imagine.. festival goers were MUCH more conservative in those days. i've never seen so many people walk out of a film. so many people walked out that at one point( i think it was right when folks thought that michael whasisname was gonna set the cop on fire ) the projectionist had thought the film had broken . after it was done i almost peed myself with the burden of having to keep it a secret. i called a friend and told him..' dude ! i can't tell you.. but fuck man..THAT was cool'
i've seen other good films and once saw a fight breakout during the secret screening of sally potter's tango. a shitty movie but an honest to goodness shouting shoving match between viewers..
i'm sorry i stopped going. sunday mornings was just too damn early for me..

If so, that's kind of disappointing. The secret screening audience will get a two-week headstart. Whoopee!

#3 Cool. You've renewed my faith in the Secret Festival. I was always told the big reason was that the films were often supposed to premier later at the Toronto film festival, but all the films I saw were shitty.

Sicko was screening last night at Pacific Place. I was tempted to walk out of Expired halfway and see what I was missing, but I figured I'd be punished either way.

Films can be hit or miss, but that's really what the Secret Festival is supposed to be about. It's not just supposed to be a chance to see a big movie a few weeks before it comes out in theatres.

I thought last week was actually a perfect example of what the Festival can do. Although I thought the film was absolutely awful, it was a real Director's Cut of a film that was taken away from the Director by the producers and distributors. He was able to cobble his vision together at home to let an audience see what he meant to do with the story.

It was something that will probably not ever be released, and he could never show it publicly.

And one of the films shown last year had no distributor at the time, and STILL has not been released. (I think for political reasons.)

I attended the secret fest three or four years ago and saw nothing but crap. Two of the films were actually made for television (an episode of Martin Scorsese's The Blues and some awful Jeff Goldblum MFTV movie about Russia). Additionally, My Life Without Me and some terrible campy movie.

I heard they played that Spike Lee heist movie a couple years later.

Still not worth it.
