ALL-AGES VENUE SHUT DOWN OVER NOISE COMPLAINTS

posted by on June 8 at 8:37 AM

…In Reno. But this could be what the future holds for Seattle if our council can’t come together to show some leadership on music and nightlife issues. This story from Reno involves Seattle band the Degenerate Art Ensemble, former Seattle resident Britt Curtis, and a pastor named John Auer (I think not OUR Jon Auer, but things change).

Britt is leading an all-ages music and art space called The Holland Project, which was sited for “disturbing the peace” and shut down just before the Degenerate Art Ensemble could perform. The Vietnam vet with a crocheted American-flag wreath hanging on his door who made the complaints that resulted in The Holland Project being shut down says, “I shouldn’t have to put up with all the teenagers.”

Our council needs to keep this in mind when crafting new noise rules or strengthening current nuisance laws to deal with nightlife issues. One pissed off old dude who doesn’t like teenagers can stir up a lot of shit. With new condos moving in across from the new Vera Project I wonder how long it will be until a similar thing happens there. However we solve the current nightlife issues, we need to create rules that won’t allow one neighbor to ruin a venue that serves thousands of people.

So, you went to Seattle Christian? Was there a seedy underbelly there, or some Spangenthal-esque scoop? This music stuff is well and good, but a little predictable, coming from you.

yeah, sorry about the headline, mistake on my part. Maybe some friendly Stranger staffer can fix that. Hecht? you there?

As for SCS. I didn't know of any seedy underbelly. Wish I had some good stories to tell about my internment there, but it wasn't very exciting, just oppressive.

the headline is ironic, you all just didn't get it.

or at least I will continue to claim this, and meinert is free to use it as an excuse for his all-caps.

Anyone who'd like to support the rad folks over at Holland can speak about the importance of their own experiences w/ all-ages music and write to Reno's local government and press via the addresses below.

Yeah! This is Joshua of Degenerate Art Ensemble. It was a totally sad experience for us. We had spent 4 hours setting up and then this happened just as we were about to go on stage. Props to the Holland Project folks who are some of the coolest people Ive met. Very Sad! Apparently this guy just moved into the neighborhood just a few weeks before, and they had spent the better part of the year building the place up. The city GAVE them that space. There should be some law saying that you cant just move into a neighborhood and tell people that are already there doing stuff there to stop what they are doing. People should make better choices as to where they move in. Go hang out in the area before buying the house/condo. YIKES for Seattle's future with all these new condos. People building their new condo projects in "Hip and Artsy" areas, then deciding that the hip and artsy people are too noisy/messy/etc and forcing them out. HMM... Whats next.
