Yeah read this earlier today and all I could think was, "brilliant move - our troops have been up to their eyeballs in insurgency just about since Day One, and some genius at DoD FINALLY thinks this up?"
Between this and the news that we're just conceding Anbar province to the insurgents (sugar-coated with reports that it's a victory for us because they're going to fight al-Qaeda), some dynamic has changed there recently.
I wonder why _I_ didn't think of it before! I heard it so many times in my childhood I can still hear it now, the sound of an NPR reporter saying "Fighting resumed today following the breakage of yesterday's cease fire..."
Umm, because "we don't negotiate with terrorists"?
While the hypocrisy is annoying, the fact that this tactic is totally unrealistic in this situation and doomed to a stupid failure is far more annoying.
We are being 'led' by idiots.
To be the pesimist here, I think Bush is going to be ratcheting the troop numbers down in Iraq for a simple reason. Exit through IRAN!!! We are not going anywhere, Iran is going to be bombed before Bush leaves the White House.
But no worries Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray will happily vote him the funds to do it. (And then it will be time to move to Canada)
