Why…

posted by on May 17 at 10:22 AM

is the PI giving American Idol the Pearl Harbor treatment on the front page?

p.s. I ran into a PI reporter on Saturday, and we were standing in front of a PI box (they had a big Blake splash on the cover that day too), and he/she cringed and wondered out loud what the fuck his/her editors were up to.

American Idol is irrelevant. It lost relevance three seasons ago. They need to cancel it.

Yes, truly pathetic. And did you notice where the first "L" in "Intelligencer" lands? Blake Lewis is HUNG!

You can argue that it is irrelevant, but it becomes newsworthy due to the massive volume of viewers they have and the local connection.

I understand The Stranger is hip and enjoys being critical of the dailies - but it's a news judgment call that fits perfectly with what they do.

As a side note: I hear today that The Everett Herald had a bickering match about this same topic because the managing editor didn't want to put it on the front page. The other editors who argued otherwise won out.

Today was the first time in the paper's history they sold out all racks around town.

And so, while you may not care - it's quite obvious the public does - and that's why journalists do these jobs. To inform the public.

Granted you can't cover American Idol every day (and you shouldn't) - but when something like this occurs it is news.

There are more categories of news than bridges and tunnels and strip clubs in Seattle, believe it or not.

What his editor was up to was selling newspapers so that, even as he deludes himself with visions of his critical role in society, that ungrateful, pretentious twit could take home a paycheck.

Yeah it's been going on for some time now.
Kind of embarrassing as my friend from Tokyo has been visiting and has asked "Why is this TV show in the Newspaper every day?"

Even though I have never seen American Idol, I do like hometown heroes so yay.

Plus, it's nice to get some good news about teenagers/young adults for once. Usually news about how they're robbing people, stealing things, driving recklessly, drinking, smoking too much, failing standardized tests, and generally disappointing and/or annoying everyone.

and/or annoying everyone.

That;s exactly what these so-called idols are doing.

But their "massive" audience is actually quite small, and dropping precipitously. Everybody likes to rag on Sanjaya, but people tuned in to watch him. These bozos? Not so much.

Send Simon and Co. back to their caves.

I would point to this morning's DS Slog post about the latest Idol elimination, and the high number of comments in the thread, as evidence that the PI is not the only sinner who should have better things to talk about.

A special nod to the Slog commenting community, which seems more interested in debating the necklessnes of Idol candidates than anything else.

Slow news day?

They may have lower rating than before, but they still out-perform all other shows in the time slot.

Whether you like it or not, to try and say the ratings are horrible is a bit misleading. They are down from the first few seasons, but that is generally how tv shows run.

Also, of course the papers will report on it. People want someone who from our state to win something. Didn't the chick from the Biggest Loser get media attention too?

They're not just down from previous years, they're well off from previous episodes THIS season. The show peaked in interest when Sanjaya was on it. No one cares about these schlubs.

And winning their time slot means less and less every year. A small fraction of all viewers are watching this, or any other single program. Most people are watching the zillion offerings on cable -- or something not even on TV.

It's all right-wing stiffery anyways.

With all the advertising dollars moving online and away from print, what you see through newspaper boxe windows is bound to get more and more sensation/irrelevent.

What bothers me most about this is that it makes Seattle look so fucking podunk.

Did I just type "get more sensation"?

Seattle is podunk, and will probably always be.

Listen to you guys.

Seattle will ALWAYS be podunk.

Big city folks aren't so image conscious. They don't need to be.

No doubt it's their ultra-hip staffers way of saying "We KNOW you and we know what you like." See, when they aren't driving around town in a limo and peeing in public, they're just like us!

I saw that P-I cover also. It was really retarded. If they had done it on the front of the entertainment section, that would be fine, but not on the front page.
