“When I Look at Jordin Sparks, I See Diabetes.”

posted by on May 24 at 15:24 PM

While that title would make a fantastic name for a band, it’s an actual quote from National Action Against Obesity’s MeMe Roth (appropriate name) who went on Fox News’ Neil Cavuto to make the case that American Idol winner Jordin Sparks shouldn’t have won the competition, because she is obese (which she clearly isn’t) and sets a bad example for children (which she clearly doesn’t—unless you count that she cries at the end of her songs, which is really annoying).
When it comes to despicable pundits, she’s no Ann Coulter, but maybe MeMe can fill in when she’s on vacation?

What she really means: Only thin, white, hot-looking chicks can win American Idol and set a positive example for children.

I fucking hate it when someone goes on about "obesity" in overwieght/ fat/ slightly overwieght/ above size 6 women (and it really is women who get the brunt of this shit) and attempts to present their arguement as being "for her health!" or "for the country's health!" when really it's about 'I hate fat chicks!" and "I think you're ugly!"
I have ranted at women in the restroom who call another 'friend' of theirs obese when they are NOT medical doctors, they DO NOT have her medical history, they probably don't know how mych she wieghs or anything about her HEALTH, but only call her obese because she's OMG!FAT!
I fucking hate that shit. I get it from my parents all the time and I hate to see women doing it to other women.
Fat girls, lets say this together: "Don't call me obese! Only my doctor can call me obese, and she doesn't call me obese becuase I AM NOT OBESE."

obese isn't that high of a BMI. &, in fact, you can diagnose your own obesity.

http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

BMI = 30+? you're obese.

mine is 27. i'm merely overweight.

Only her doctor -- or really her scale -- knows whether she is technically obese or merely overweight. But the fact remains that she is clearly overweight. Why not call it what she is? It's unhealthy for her to be overweight and it's unhealthy to all of us when we pretend that being overweight is ok for people just because we don't want to hurt their self esteem. So call it what it is: overweight, fat, whatever. A person's ability to keep a healthy weight should indeed be part of the makeup of his or her self esteem.

This woman is despicable and ridiculous. There is a need to address obesity and health in our society, but not by parading a scrawny white chick on Fox to tell me that Jordin needs to be 40 pounds thinner to be attractive.

The girl is only 17. Why can't these foolish conservatives pick on someone eligible to vote?

@4: Have you really looked at Jordin? She's a little thick, sure, but she doesn't look unhealthy at all. There have been much heavier-looking female contestants (Kimberly Locke, JENNIFER HUDSON), and no one told them they were diabetes poster-children.

Fox once again stoops (schtups?) for headlines. Doesn't matter what is said as long as it evokes reaction. Used to be called yellow journalism.

Don't know where they found Meme - Central Casting probably. But she certainly played her part to a tee: She's the office manager from Hell - the one who really, really enjoys her bowel movements and goes to bed at night proud that she got through the day eating only a wedge of lettuce, an orange, and a Vitamin Water.

That girl looks fine. She's big, but it's not even worth mentioning. How is this pundit helping?

BUT SPEAKING OF FAT... Ironic that 24 hour news channels are always running stories like this (America's Obesity Epidemic!!! Oh no, cue stock footage of bellies and asses of people we shot on the street!), since only the most sedentary people would ever even stumble across these programs. You want to help America get a little more fit MSNBC, FOX, CNN? Talk to your fucking sponsors, outside of athletic apparel and boner medication, I can't think of a goddamn ad I've seen recently that wasn't a player in the chain of our American chubby livin'.

Meme sees diabetes just because Jordin is thick? Really? That's totally f*Cked

OK, using that same logic, this is what I see when I look at Meme: Self-hate, rotting teeth, ulcers, a esophagus eaten away by stomach acid, osteoporosis....

Being slightly overweight is not in itself a health risk. Read the research folks.

You know what is unhealthy? Pushing your body to a weight lower than it's pre-determined range.

So many women on tv are skirting eating disorders these days a woman who has a body fat percentage above 1% becomes a target with a false "OMG think of the children!" bullshit.

Give her time. Once famous, most of these guys lose weight:
Kelly Clarkson
Ricki Lake

Nicole Ritchie

The eating disorder is surely to come.

Obese my lily-white size-6 ass. That child is no such thing. She's what we used to call "pleasantly plump" back when even movie stars had real boobs and butts, not surgically-enhanced ones.

To this kook, Marilyn Monroe would be a cow. That's just sad. I'm no chubby-chaser, but "obese"? Give me a fucking break.

I would have to lose 75 pounds to be "normal" according to the BMI. I haven't weighed my "ideal" weight since I was 14. The BMI doesn't account for my wide shoulders and giant brain.

I don't take health advice from anorexics anyway. Specially blonde Republocun*s.

So Jordin Sparks (who modeled for a plus size clothing store prior to this, btw)shouldn't win because making a fat girl famous is a bad example for our children and she is a picture of diabetes? Lindsey Lohan is a picture of drug abuse and Paris Hilton is a picture of Chlamydia and their pathetic stars rise far above the realm of "reality TV winner". At least she is getting her five minutes of fame for something other than snorting lines off a toilet or not wearing panties.

@4: "A person's ability to keep a healthy weight should indeed be part of the makeup of his or her self esteem."

Sound the alarms, this one comes from a fat person with the nerve to feel good about herself.

Do you think that anorexia and bulimia are caused by high self-esteem, Ron-o? Or maybe you think those ladies (and yes, usually they are women) should feel bad about themselves because they don't weigh enough? That'd help, sure.

No, the truth is that some people are predisposed to fat (read some of the research), as some are predisposed to cancer. Maybe the ability to keep a body free of cancer should indeed be part of the makeup of one's self esteem, too.

But let's also remember that fat is not a disease. I'd take your cholesterol count on any day, buddy. My pulse rate is textbook perfect, as is my blood sugar.

And finally, I think that MeMeMe is a racist. She's using statistical predispositions of people of color for the diseases she mentions to point a finger at an individual. Do we actually know if Jordin has any of those diseases in her particular family unit? No. I don't, and I'm sure MeMeMe doesn't either. It's shocking someone pays her to go on TV and condemn a beautiful, normal, talented 17-year-old. For shame.

Given the media's widespread use digital image manipulation it is factually impossible, not to mention unfair, to judge the health or slenderness of any normal woman(or any man) who happens to find themselves on television or in a magazine photo. Without manipulation, even naturally slender people look fat on TV, epecially if they are wearing off-the-rack clothing or have natural breasts.

Oh, god. *Obese*? Are you kidding me? I wouldn't even call her overweight at all. Curvy, maybe. *Pleasantly* curvy. In the literal sense of the word, not just as a euphemism for overweight. This woman is fine just as she is.

Posted by Kay | May 24, 2007 5:34 PM

Speaking as an obese person, and all that, obesity's pretty easy to spot. Obesity is _defined_ as the state of being over a certain bmi. (Can you calculate height and weight relatively accurately? Then you'll be close.) I'm sure if someone was dancing around that bmi, calling that person obese would be horrible & tacky. I'm nowhere near that line, and I've got no problem having non-confrontational, non-hysterical discussions about bmi/weight/etc. I wish more people could, I'm tired of all this shrill "sizeist!" and "how dare you classify me by a physical characteristic!" crap. This is the real world, folks, and people will judge you by physical characteristics no matter whether you like it or not.

Let's not pretend that being seriously obese is simply some sort of neutral state of being that doesn't affect your health. That said, being on the curvy side is damned sexy, and shouldn't be lumped in.

(And for the record, I eat healthily, I exercise, and my cholesterol is just fine, thank you.) =)

At the least she's pretty close to the same size I am (well, ignoring the fact that she's a zillion feet tall or something), and at worst a bit bigger, which would make her probably about a 14 (taking into account that she's tall).

Ooooooooooooooooo, what a fatty.

Ruben Studdard anyone?!? Fatso men are all over the place and they pick on one girl who's medically overweight but still looks good?!? I'm f-ing irate! Lindsey Lohan cokes and boozes it up before her anorexic ass is even 21, Britney has 2 pathetic marraiges, stints in rehab and is a joke of a mother, Paris Hilton and her nasty tape?!? These things bother me A LOT MORE as far as "role models for teens" than one girl with a curvy body who can really sing!!! Being 30lbs overweight at 17- there's not even any data that this is a health risk, whereas drinking, smoking, purging & snorting obviously are! Let's pick on the celebs who really are shit examples, not average-shaped Jordin!

Rather than vent to deaf ears on this thread - do what I did... and WRITE ( and CC ) your complaint to the following Fox News e-mail addresses.

Both sides are wrong. The people who are defending Jordin and Meme Roth. The comments I've read directed towards Meme Roth are sickening. Anorexic? Nope. Stop spewing out lies. I've heard that people have given her death threats called her a b**** and even call her a Nazi! It's disgusting how people fling insults towards a person and how obsessed people are with a particular person. This doesn't mean I'm defending Meme Roth. I think what she said is wrong because she can't indirectly say that Jordin has diabetes or is overall unhealthy. Yes being overweight isn't good but she shouldn't insult her. She took it too far.

Jordin IS HEALTY if you ask the real experts. It comes down to her excellent waist-hip ratio.
This is apparently what matters - not BMI. It's surprising so few people have heard about this stuff!
