I'm happy to hear that the UW is using walking teams for their campus escorts. (Although a nighttime service clearly wouldn't have helped the gal who was shot on campus.) I used to work for the student-run campus safety service at my undergrad school. (Officially called the "Escort Service".) Being a private university, the school provided us with 3 compact cars to haul around students at night. We quickly turned into a de facto free taxi service to take groups of lazy students to/from the bars.
Wow, I thought something totally different when I read that headline...
Fun fact: Originally UW Cares had only a single escort. The practice was changed to two escorts after Ted Bundy became an escort and used the service to find some of his victims.
re: #3, can't wait for the first instance of a stalker joining the escort group and getting an assignment to escort his target.
That save, a lovely deterrent... that like UW Cares will die off, either after this whole furor dies down or after some girl gets capped by a stalker anyway.
I saw a guy just yesterday with a red polo shirt which read: Seattle Male Escort.
I was less than impressed.
Um, yeah, right. They're going to escort every pizza delivery driver, every photographer, every library visitor, etc that hits the campus 24/7? Without a hundred escorts, they have no chance at all of covering every non-student that comes on campus. This is a lost cause and waste of effort.
