Slog - Comments on Twenty-Year Director of the Henry Art Gallery to Step Down

"Congratulations," I told Richard Andrews this afternoon when I learned he was planning to leave his job in February. "Thanks," he said after a short pause, seemingly never at a loss for civil words even when the comment he's responding to is slightly ... off. "I mean, a couple of other people have said the same thing to me, and I guess that's the right thing to say." "Yes, right," I said. "I didn't know quite what to say, actually. I guess it's a good thing. You're getting a break, and it has been quite a while, after all." "Well...

Comment by Linda

I used to think that a periodic change in leadership (every 5, 10, 15 years depending on the institution's size) was a good, healthy thing. It allows for an infusion of new ideas and perspectives. In recent years, though, the leadership deficit in the arts (and nonprofit world) has forced me to reassess this thinking. It's so very difficult to find a good leader—one who can take risks AND keep an organization financially afloat. The role of museum director has become one of endless fundraising akin to the fundraising activities required of our congressional representatives to remain viable.

Richards Andrews has done a phenomenal job of keeping the Henry's exhibitions and programming fresh and vital. I have no idea how he's been able to do so, and I respect him tremendously. I hope he'll continue to lend his talents and vision to projects such as Art:21.

The Henry's board has their job cut out for them in finding Andrews' successor (just as the Walker's board does in replacing Kathy Halbreich—thanks Adam). Those executive recruiting firms are fighting tooth and nail to identify good candidates. I wish them luck. To Richard Andrews I give my heartfelt thanks for opening my eyes and mind to engaging and challenging art and ideas.
