I saw them live until 1991, when the band started preaching against homosexuality without provocation. Last straw.
Damn faggots ruin everything.
I saw 'em in '89. The singer was impressive having just been in an incident requiring crutches. (I have an 'actual' fishbone tattoo). For shame, 'whereever that is?)', that means no concerts at Studio Seven previously? you don 't like gigs with balls? Check out Pegasus or Trainyard- is Audioslave back in town?
i agree with #1, and i find it weird that the stranger is putting so much effort into promoting these homophobes.
I call for a Buju Banton sized protest!
Oh wait it's at Studio 7. Teh Gheys sez it's OK for homophobes to play there so nevermind.
Oh damn, off topic. My bad.
I saw Fishbone at Olympic Auditorium in '86. Norwood was all dreaded out rasta dude then. Then some skinheads jumped on stage and stabbed him. The next week I saw him on Carson and he was all cripped up, Cuz. C Ridin' in houshoes and cut off khakis with a shower cap on and everything.
The lyrics to "Servitude" from 1993. I wanted to except, but the meaning was lost, so here's the whole damn thing:
Who, Who do you serve?
For whose empire and for whose whims?
Is your honor judged by men?
Will you lie?
Will you lie if they say it's their will?
Will you die or continue to kill?
Until the generals all ahve their fill
Craven Cowards
Armchair Warriors
You will serve Them well
What, what will you write?
For whose pleasure, for whose delight?
Will your readers see your light?
Will you say...That the singer can't blow you away?
That we hate people just 'cause they're gay
Women and children all stay away
To whom, whom do you pray?
Do dollars wash your sins away?
Does God love cold hard cash?
Do you say...If we all just continue to pay
All our ailments will go away
And our souls will be saved
God's not with you
"Holy Roller"
Your heart dwells in Hell
Why, Why do you run?
Our awareness has spoiled your fun
Our eyes see you too clear
Will you hide
From the joy of expressing our pride
For the leaders and people who've died
While combating your genocide
Chains are breaking
Minds are waking
Soon we'll serve no more...
Please pass on a citation for this homophobia thing? I will be bummed but I need to know.
I think the homophobia left when Kendall left.. I hope. And I doubt you're going to see too many anti-Fishbone articles out there online today that reference this, but just ask anyone who saw the band in the late 80s and early 90s.
Keep in mind it was still quasi-chic to be homobigoted then. You could find even a Chuck D quote in magazine interviews where he said he didn't understand homosexuality e.g. "the parts don't fit" circa 1990 or so.
The rant in 'Homophobia' in the good dance number by Chumbawumba is a nice listen on "Showbusiness", their double cd. One disk is a live concert, the other is speeches by Chomsky. The speeches are gradually becoming more and more irritating, but the live songchants like "i crawled thru the mud but i never gave up" and "what we need is a break from the old routine" keep the music cd in rotation.
the show was awesome last night. perfect way to spend my birthday with some friends. I've seen fishbone while they were at some of their highs and lows (basically breakup shows). They were very very VERY much on point last night delivering what a fishbone fan was looking for.
RE: homophobia
During the Dr Mad Vibe intro to their set Angelo made it explicitly clear HE didn't care about anyones sexuality. I wish I had a better quote or direct answers to how the band as a whole feels.
This would probably be a good question to bring up at their band forum/site fishbone.net
