City BREAKING: Capitol Hill Seattle Blog Working With Anti-Gay Bigots!
posted by on May 25 at 11:20 AM
They’re voting over at CHS on what should go into the old Rainbow Grocery space up on 15th. CHS isn’t clear about whether we’re voting on what we’d like to see in the space or what we’re likely to see in the space—I suspect the latter, as “a large chain retailer” is currently in the lead.
The polling service CHS is using—Opinion Republic—allows people to add more candidates/possibilities to an already up-and-running poll. Neato! I’d like to see a gay bar in that space, which is not among the current options. Cha Cha found a new space, but Manray is homeless. But when I attempted to add “gay bar” to the poll I got this message:
Your response contains innappropriate language (sic). Please revise.
So I attempted to add “a homosexual establishment.”
Your response contains innappropriate language. Please revise.
Christ! So I attempted to add “a place where men can drink and sing showtunes.” Third time’s the charm. No offensive language—no “gay,” no “homosexual”—so my option was in. Only my option didn’t turn up when I went back to CHS! A moment later the poll itself stopped functioning—so maybe “showtunes” is “innappropriate language” too? Quick! Someone alert the Seattle Commission on Sexual Minorities!
In an earlier post about the poll CHS says…
Opinion Republic has been crappy the last few times we tried to use it. If it continues to suck, we reserve the right to pull its sorry ass and replace with a poll that actually works.
Crappy and bigoted, CHS—take your business elsewhere. (But add “gay bar” to the list, please.)

Isn't that storefront on 15th?
I'm just sayin..
by 15th, you mean 19th?
by 19th, you mean 15th?
I just voted for "a place where men can drink and sing cocktails."
and by cocktails i mean show tunes. heh.
I tried to vote for the men drinking and singing showtunes (which shows up for me as an option) but the post-voting page is apparently the nine thousandth website that my work's Internet filter has decided is pornographic. So I don't know if it worked.
As far as I can tell this is a vote for what people think will go in there, not what should (hence "large chain retailer" being in the lead).
In other polls on that site, "Pirates of the Caribbean - Curse of the Black Pearl" is currently in second place for "best movie of all time", so it seems unlikely to be drenched in validity.
The reason "large chain retailer" is most likely is because the rent is $9,000 a month.
$9000 bucks! Jesus. Charge the customers per showtune they sing. That's only fair.
And by "$9,000 a month", I mean "$7,333.33 a month", of course.
Please elaborate, Fnarf.
"Gay" and "homosexual" are offensive, but "S&M" got through. I voted for an independent record store.
I assume the reason "gay" is banned from the poll is that the majority of free-text entries with "gay" in the text are anti-gay slurs, and they don't pay somebody to read each one and judge. I wouldn't call Opinion Republic bigoted just yet.
I fucking HATE show tunes!
Dan, that's lame. You're making unfounded accusations and basically besmirching the names of both O.R. and CHS.
It's possible that O.R. has an anti-gay agenda but you don't really make that strong of a case for it, as Scott @19 points out.
And even if they are (which we absolutaely do not know yet), obviosly CHS didn't know about it, but your phrase "working with" comes pretty close to implying complicity.
Nice "shoot first ask questions later" tactics.
um, I meant Scott @13
Jeez, be careful where you point that thing, Savage. Opinion Republic, source of endless disappointment. Online polls, source of endless disappointment. I'm about to get on an airplane so ain't nothing gonna happen to the poll until I'm back on the ground but this is yet another reason to find a different solution. Suggestions welcome. Maybe we should have a poll. Oh wait.
Oh, and it's not about what SHOULD go in the space. We're asking for PREDICTIONS, not WISHES. Thanks and have a wonderful weekend boys and girls!
Elaboration: I fucked up the first time with the "$9,000" part. It's $7,333.33 per month, or $88,000 a year: $20 a square foot times 4,400 square feet. The "by which I meant" part was following the theme of ridiculous corrections that make up this comment thread.
Crap, I'm having to explain my jokes. You know how, if you don't get enough coffee early enough in the morning, it doesn't matter how much coffee you drink later on; you can never catch up? That's the kind of day I'm having. It's just a shame you're having to see it in such minute detail in the Slog comments, BECAUSE I HAVE NO LIFE.
I am what I am ......
shut up dan savage. you are such a fucking whiner. try being a minority gay man and then see if you are still whining. white gay men have it easy. try being brown and gay and living in a neighborhood full of guys who wear baggy pants and carry weapons and literally want to kill you every time you walk by. try going to an inner city school and being gay ok. all you have to worry about is being discrimnated against. some of us had to worry about being beaten down growing up.
