The Science Hope

posted by on May 29 at 14:08 PM

It’s only a matter of time before the bird-flu goes the way of Y2K. The only thing man should really fear is man. That is the message transmitted to us from the history of Easter Island.

Charles,
I would take Easter Island to show man should fear religion.

Overpopulation led to scarce resources fighting, yet all the people did to try to fix the mess was build more big heads. Hence the handful of survivors decades later when explorers returned.

Pandemics, unlike the elusive Y2K collapse, have actually happened in the past. Thinking about how they might be prevented in the future is therefore not unreasonable -- it's exactly the kind of task that public health agencies were created to perform.

Billions of dollars were spent in fixing critical systems in anticipation of Y2K. Given a few years notice of the problem, we were able to mobilize resources, fix problems, and prevent major disruptions. Judging from the annual defense budget, the US has invested more time and money for the "Easter Island problem." Are we doing the same for bird flu?

The exciting thing here is that now mice are safe from the threat! Which is good, because I believe their anti-bird flu research was going nowhere fast.

Im leaning with Mudede on this one.

Glad that bird flu might not be such a threat. Y2K and the whole year 2000 thing were a predictable nonevent. (I won a 100 dollar bet I made in 1985) I will also win my bet that 2012 will come and go just like 2000 did. In case you were not aware the charlatans are now saying that the "Mayan Cycle" or some drivel will "come to a head" on December 23, 20012. I have dinner reservations for December 24th after I collect winnings from that bet.

It was easier to mobilize for Y2K because:
1) the problem had a known solution;
2) the problem had a fixed "doomsday";
3) rich people's money was at stake.

Pandemics and global warming to not share these mobilization "advantages".

Comments here that Y2K was not a "real problem" are uninformed. (BTW, I'm
a professional software engineer.)
