I like "The Dude and Catastrophe". Any Seattle-area pubs that adopt British-style names should be shunned, though. The George & Dragon barely squeaks by on historical grounds. Say no to theme pubs.

I was at this nerdcore rap show at El Corazon a couple weeks ago, and MC Frontalot did this song called "On the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe" about waking up the morning after a party and finding Todd the Squirrel's remains on the barbecue.

Because why, exactly?

And not only is The Slug and Lettuce a real place-- it's a chain, sad to say.

One of my favorite business names in the UK; there's a soliciter's (lawyer's) office in Cardiff called Loosemores. Leaving aside, of course, the ubiquitous "Traditional Family Butchers".

I wondered when Traunfeld might move on. I've enjoyed his meals at both the old and the new locations and like his cookbooks. I wish him well and look forward to trying out his new spot.

Please tell me you took that picture of the Scrumpy somewhere in Seattle and didn't just pull it off of Google image search. I love that stuff and you cant find it in Seattle.

I took the photo in a grocery store in Tonbridge, alas (also was stupid-fascinated by stuff like buns being called "bap"). Wish you and I both had a Scrumpy Jack right now!

Has the moratorium on naming bars with made up initials been lifted? I want to open a pub called F.Q. McSomething's.

Because it's stupid and pretentious, that's why. As you point out, The Slug and Lettuce is a chain, even, like the Fox and Firkin; they're marketing bogus queer quaint Britishisms, and we should not be emulating them. Proper Seattle taverns should have names like The Viking and The Kort Haus and The Buckaroo.

No Seattle bar could ever in a million years be as good as a good English pub, and none could ever be as bad as a bad one. I'd like to see more bars with no music, for a start....

@8:
The other problem with all these damn English pub names north of the ship canal is that it's impossible to keep them straight.

"Meet you at the The Pig and Thistle. I mean the Pig and Owl. Pig and Blanket? I think it has a pig in it. Fuck it, I'll see you at Linda's."

Fnarf rocks, I can't remember the first time we met, maybe at a popfest in Shelton. The Buckaroo was one of the first bars I went to in Seattle. The Kort Haus a great exotic burger menu; it still all tastes like kind of like chicken to me. The Viking? Is that a few blocks south of that buddhist place?
There's even a joke that circulates in those places.

Who's Linda?
You mean Lynn, duh.
No really, it's a cool place.
Now if Lynnwould, then you're talking.
That's it Miklusek, you're eighty-sixed, get the fuck out.

How about "The Swan & The Pedo?" It's a fictitious pub from GR, but not out of the realm of possibility, given the bizarre pubs I've had the pleasure of visiting.
