Comments on THE FUTURE IS GOOD

Damn, this is great news. I gotta say, first and foremost I'm a Seattle Storm fan. Now, with the whole OKC ownership situation, I've been finding it very hard to work up any passion for the Sonics. I mean, it's a lot easier to imagine a scenario where the Storm stay than one where the Sonics stay. In fact, I've been feeling my NBA allegiance drift southward. Let's see:

• I love Portland.
• The Blazers have Nate McMillan.
• I love those black and red Blazers colors. (Yes, I'm that superficial.)
• I kinda like their young talent: Roy, Rodriguez, Webster.

Anyway, between my new NBA dalliance, the Blazers, getting #1 (Oden) and whatever momentum the #2 pick (Durant) gives to the prospect of the Sonics staying here -- I'm pretty stoked. And no, this doesn't make me feel any better about Bennett's Renton proposal, which is (A) corporate welfare and (B) horrific urban planning.

It's times like this I am grateful for the nefarious genius that is David Stern. Now back to the playoff game between two of my true favorite teams, the Spurs and Jazz...

This is so fucking exciting for NW Basketball! Please let this save the sonics and please let the Blazers win the championship in the next few years!!!!

Seattle Times sportswriter Percy Allen says that picking Durant will save the Sonics and keep them in Seattle.

Of course, Percy Allen loses his job if the Sonics move, since he's the Sonics beat guy, so I think he's a little biased.

Personally, I think anyone who seriously believes Kevin Durant or Greg Oden can revive enough interest in the Sonics to keep them in town is out of their minds.

Question: where did the name Sonics some from? Is it because of Boeing being based in Seattle?

The Sonics were named after a supersonic Boeing jet that ended up being canceled before anything ever got built.

The Sonics are gone, regardless, but hey I wouldnt mind seeing one year with Oden. Dude is unreal. Big men with that kind of versatility dont come around. A smaller quicker version of Hakeem. He is worth a cheap ticket.

I know Feit be hating on the Sonics, I wanna see Feit's face when Oden cleans the floor with his man-crush Arenas.

Did the NBA rig the lottery to guarantee Seattle one of the top two picks to increase public support for keeping the team? Clearly the NBA wants the team in Seattle and not Oklahoma City, so manipulating the lottery would make sense.

i don't get it... i'm not a basketball fan. why does a better pick mean the sonic might stay? because there is now more interest? (and what, there isn't more interest in OK now?) meaning people will now pay more to keep them here? maybe the taxpayers will now fund a new arena?

It is not at all clear that the NBA wants a team to stay in Seattle. David Stern does like to always have the threat of teams moving to keep potential cities interested and the home cities ponying up public cash out of fear.

It would be pretty hilarious if the Sonics got Oden since they've drafted centers in the first round for the last few years. Not as good as Oden, of course, but it sure would make those previous picks pretty worthless.

ok, i've come down. i should know better than to expect much enthusiasm up in here. so the sonics probably won't stay. but both oden and durant are good enough players to re-energize a team and a city.

worst case, we get a year or two with durant (i think oden has to go #1). and i'll take that gladly.

Truth be told, Portland would be stupid to not pick Oden. Imagine Brandon and Oden on the same floor.

I dont think the Sonics are staying, nor do I think one player can keep them here, Im just saying it would be fun to watch a good squad on the floor for the last year.

This is a draft spot so good, even the Sonics can’t f*** it up.

Infrequent—it’s because the Sonics are almost guaranteed to not suck for the next 5-10 years. The top two draft picks available are that good. And support for stadiums is never about logic and reason; it’s about emotion and the mad passion of being in a large, like-thinking group. It’s the closest thing we have to religion that’s not religion.

Durant would go number one any other year, so having the number two pick this year is almost as good as a number one in any other draft (or better). It's like if Tim Duncan and Lebron James were in the same draft. Kinda makes Rashard Lewis expendible, though. Oklahoma City fans should be psyched.

I think the sonics stay with Durant. Maybe not with Oden, but the chances go up considerably.

The money to be made in OKC, regardless of arena deal, is nowhere near the money to be made here in Seattle. And the odds of private funding for an arena just shot way the heck up.

I think the worst Bennet can do is run Stern out of patience and get kicked out.

Now all the Sonics need is a good coach (Marc Ivaroni from the suns maybe?) and a good GM.

Did anyone see Bennett was in KANSAS CITY talking about how nice it looks as an option? Im gonna send Clay a box of my shit if they leave us...
