Just an FYI. The target of the attack would have been Fred Phelps and his clan. I'm glad the attack was averted, but part of me is sorry that Phelps & Co didn't burn in a lake of fire.

Losing the Phelps traveling performance artists would be unfortunate.
Just because they don't know they're comedians doesn't mean they aren't brilliantly funny.

Plus they show exactly how ridiculous the "mainstream" evangelical churches are with their own scriptural adherence.

i don't care how atrocious phelps and his ilk are (and they are, quite), they have a right to free speech, and the right-wing whacko nut job religious fanatic kid planning to silence them with gasoline bombs is just awful. and these are the people that claim that we'd have no morals without religion? please. i'm with kant, morality brings religion, but does not come from it.

It seems to me that had they succeeded they would have been very useful idiots indeed.

1.) No more Phelps.
2.) Would have shown the world that Christianists are an equal threat and menace to Islamists.
3.) Bush would have been forced to decry Christian Terrorists with ideological links to Falwell.

Seems like it would have been an insignificant expense to expose Christianists for what they (potential) are.

@6 - Point of clarity: it's inaccurate to call Phelps and his ilk part of the "mainstream" church. They're more of a self-contained cult, like the Branch Davidians or something.

@11 its just a little abstract venting about a possible internecine conflict within the religious right. they certainly deserve it for all the devastation they are causing here and abroad.

But the Phelps clan need to stay where they are. They are the best thing for national unity since 9/11, and its a good thing that the country can be united in its hatred of these psychos. especially when they use the same rhetoric as the Christian Right writ large

If, when, there is a theocracy in this country the top Christian sect will destroy all others. As it will likely be the super fundies, not quite the radical right, there will still be a judgement upon any nonbelievers or believers that don't follow their specific rule of law. It would be another inquisition. Don't, for a minute, believe it could not happen.

There will never be a Xtian theocracy here because the various flavors don't trust each other - although I have been a little creeped out by the seeming willingness of the Catholics and Mormons to join with the Baptists and their ilk on select social issues.

But the barely supressed predjudices lurk just below the surface. That's what makes the Romney canidacy so interesting. How long will it take before the Xtian fundies heads explode over this "cultist"?

I was referring to the vast network of evangelical churches as "mainstream" churches. Each "fundamentalist" evangelical subset has its own list of scripture that must be interpreted literally while ignoring the rules from the other 95% of the Bible.

Or else they'd all go to church on Saturday, have separate buildings for when their womenfolk are "unclean, not borrow or lend money, etc.

It's all about tradition.
Not even the most fundie Christian will admit to living the laws of Isreal, they could be called out (even more so) on their hypocracy.
Early Christian leaders wanted to convert the masses, and the masses were used to public worship on the Sun's Day. Early Christians (about 100-200 years after Christ) also wanted to distinguish themselves from Jews, before about 100 AD Christians were cool with being a subset of Judaism.
So after Martin Luther's big tantrum against Rome, the just kept Sunday because they still didn't want to be associated with dirty Jews, and they were just used to going to church on Sunday.
