SIFF’s Velvet Rope

posted by on May 25 at 11:15 AM

My plan last night was to skip out on the Vera Project’s “anti-prom” between DD/MM/YYYY and Japanther and grab a drink at the SIFF opening gala. Dan gave me a pair of tickets on the condition that I slog about it. But the wizened man at the velvet rope said my tickets were only valid for the Son of Rambow screening and not the gala event:

Meh. Japanther rocked as always, and the Vera’s anti-prom (theme: “under the sea”) was a blast. Maybe next year, SIFF.

I hate velvet ropes. We need to storm the castle.

the siff opening was, as advertised, gala. the movie was too fucking darling (son of rambo), and the crowd was gargantuan. highlights of the opening included gary tucker's always delightful and rousing "march of sponsors", deborah person (siff's managing director) looking like a fantastic marshmallow, and the limey filmmaker's introduction, which delightful qand blessedly short. the friexnet flowed copiously, the canapé canapéd appropriately, and sean nelson was molested by admirers every five or so feet (i followed him in secret for a while and thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle of it). That is all.

I take back all the nasty things I said about VERA. That place charmed the pants off of me last night.

Poloroid prom photos, punch, snacks and stree-level punk rock? Kids dancing to the DJ and the bands?

Hell yeah.

Aw heck, Sean ought to be used to that sort of thing by now.

And really, how hard is it to "follow" one of the tallest guys in the room?

I suspect that the guy at the velvet rope had been sampling the bombay sapphire. I didn't think they even sold tickets for the opening movie -- if anything, a lot of people usually end up with gala-only tickets.

You just have to walk into the parties like you belong there. Next time, try a little less attitude and realize that the barriers break down within minutes.

Apologies to Eric Grandy - Some "wizened" door person did not know their job: All tickets to the opening night film included admission to the post-film gala. Your tickets would not have gotten you into the "VIP tent," but you should have been able to gain access to the rest of the shin-digs which took place in the Exhibition Hall and were much livelier than the VIP area anyway. Ah, well, we get what we pay for. Hope you had fun at Vera.
Thanks to adrian! for the nice words about the endless sponsor parade.
