Cindy quitting really did not make my week any better. First the Dems cave to Bush on Iraq, Rosie leaves the view (even though I am not fan of her, it kinda sucks) and now Cindy quits. Fox News is naturally going to spin this as huge vicoties for the facist right of Amerika.
But I am going to try to visit with Maria Cantwell at lunch today to express my disgust with her support of the Iraq occupation. She sent me a form e-mail last week after I sent her three e-mails begging her not to vote for it then asking why she voted for it.
At times I really hate my country....

And poor little Cindy can go down and commiserate with her buddy Hugo Chavez. Misery loves company.

I sympathize with cindy (in my role as a shop foreman for a local union)... its hard to fight for the rights of people who don't give a shit about them. few people will stand up for what they believe in. they all want "someone else" to do it. well, guess what... you only have the freedoms and rights you fight for. I am glad that i am still a Canadian citizen (born there, moved here at 3 yrs old)... I never really even thought about moving back until they started to take away my habeas corpus (a right in common law since 1215!!!) and my right to peacefully assemble (free speech zones my fucking ass!!). now i have a back-up plan for when bush starts shit with Iran...
Did you hear General Pace on Friday? He said that the terrorists have a 100 year plan for what they want to do. Is it just me or did he just tell us that we are going to be in Iraq for 100 years? And why is no one asking about the permament bases they are building in Iraq nor the embassy in Iraq that the contractors are building that is larger than the Vatican?
I was somewhat dismayed to hear that Cindy Sheehan is giving up, although I can totally understand her frustration.
I really don't understand the lack of active opposition. Bush's poll numbers have stagnated at around 30% or less for well over a year. Polls also indicate about the same numbers support this stupid war. And yet there is no strong dominant voice that people opposed to the war rally around. There are no serious massive protests. The Democrats have more-or-less caved. Bush, as always, ignores any voice of dissent or opposition.
I wonder just have far we have to go before a tipping point is reached? Why, with 70% of the population opposed to this war, have we not already reached that tipping point? WTF will it take to get us ou?
Who gives a crap about Cindy Sheehan. I had respect for her up until her little "I'm-gonna-take-my-ball-and-go-home" crybaby temper tantrum. She complains that people think she is an "attention whore" but then creates such a scene like some sort of upset, disgruntled prom queen.

I think the only thing we can do short of leaving the country in mass protest before Bush attacks Iran (God help us all if that actually happens) is to not let up on our two senators who voted for the funding bill and find new candidates to run against Patty Murray in 2010 and someone to run against Maria Cantwell in 2012. They have to know this is game over for them. But then I also have to admit our attention span is about 30 seconds so we will no doubt forget about this in a few more days.
The American Idol crack Cindy made was really classic and sadly true. Can you imagine how much more successful Hitler would have been with iPods and reality TV? (Scares the crap out of me when you think about it)
The Democrats only have 50 votes in the Senate (Lieberman would split) and the President would veto anything that would actually end the war, so it's not like there's anything they could actually they could do to end the war as long as Bush is in the Whitehouse.
2008 is the election that can end the war, not 2006.
I was actually impressed by her "farewell" letter, and had never been that taken with her in general. It became clear to me that she's not interested in being partisan and is not showboating, and she is just as frustrated with the anti-war movement as a lot of others are. I don't understand how people could throw so much vitriol at her; she's a grieving mother who has stood for what she believed and tried to honor her son.
Congress holds the purse strings for war, not the President. The Congress could have and should have sent the same bill up to White House that Bush previously vetoed. Ultimately, the Congress can simply NOT issue legistlation to fund the war which is how we ended up getting out of Vietnam. Congress cut off the money.
And the 50 vote thing is disturbing. Only 14 Senators voted against the funding bill. There are a lot of Democrats who really screwed up on this so to put the blame only on the Republicans at this point is frankly not being totally honest to the facts.
And keep in mind both Obama and Hillary waited until the last minute last week to vote against the funding of the Iraq Occupation. That alone should give anyone some pause about the viability either of those two will get us out of Iraq. We are in a much bigger hole than most of us realize and it will take real political wit and strong convictions to get us out of it. What the Democrats demonstrated last week is an unwillingness to take on a president with less than 30% approval ratings and do all that is possible to end a war that 70% of Americans wanted out of long ago.
Again WRITE AND CALL Sen. Murray and Cantwell!!!! Ride their asses on this issue!!!

Am I the only liberal who's glad that Sheehan is "leaving"? I think we need a better person than someone who seems more qualified to make unproductive nuisances than productive TV appearances at the front of the antiwar movement outside of Washington.

Far too many people that question this war are content to rely upon a political party to get us out of it. They don't realize how important it is to politicians to continue the war. They ignore that possibility because it makes them question their knowledge of history and the "glory" of American legend.
