What does TGFS mean? I'm old and don't understand these things.

By the way, since we're talking about acronyms, the acronym for the Community Development Round Table is CDRT.

Josh - welcome to the real Seattle.. (keep a watch on the Rainier Club as well)

And here's hoping you push the Stranger into a bit more investigative reporting about some of these "good old boy" links and what they mean for projects, money, and policies. And how they totally fuck with citizen groups and citizen views quite often.

Good luck, good direction.

The two dailies allow themselves to be bought off. If the money is big enough, they will look the other way when it comes to a certain kind of public corruption. It is the kind of corruption that makes big money for a large percentage of that lunch club’s membership.

Here’s a recent example of a public entity making a payoff for good press. Notice the big insert the Port of Seattle put in the Sunday paper yesterday? Now watch what happens: reporting and editorializing about the Port will become much more favorable.

The Port learned about buying upbeat ink by observing the results of Sound Transit’s payoffs to the JOA partners.

Re: acronyms -
According to the British, an acronym must be spoken as a word; thus neither TGFS nor CDRT likely qualifies as such.

However, WAC may, even when used redundantly in phrases such as "WAC club".

@6 - totally. BUT, what the hell do you call things like TGIF, CDRT, ROTFLMAO, FBI, etc.? Just initials? There should be another word, don't you think?

@5: Prove it.

What you and your ilk imply not only is offensive to the hard-working reporters in this town (and yeah, there are a few non-hard-working ones ... primarily, in the broadcast medium) but also is ridiculously uninformed.

If you have an issue with what's on the front page of your newspaper, or you question the decisioning of what's covered and what's not, I would strongly urge you simply *call* an editor or reader representative at one of the dailies and request to sit in on a daily news meeeting. Most often, we can accommodate your request.

You will be surprised at the lack of smoke (except outside ... 15 feet from the entrances ... sigh) and mirrors. Scout's honor.

1, 6, 7: initialisms, not acronyms.

Would somebody investigate Josh hanging with a pal in the mayor's office and Eric drinking with Steinbrueck?

It can't be true, can it?

How about Josh writing press releases for the Monorail?

I think it's okay for reporters to schmooze with big-wigs (or little wigs). It's important for the media to keep an eye on public officials and private VIPs. Otherwise, they aren't doing their job.

However, they shouldn't forget who they work for and serve as smart watchdogs to make sure they don't fall in the Bob Woodward trap and become soft.

Keep trying/smearing to justify your errant story claiming the PFD violated some law (when it actually complied with it) by tossing in some more guesswork/innuendo and revealing that these fellow travelers actually might know each other! Another great Strangler scoop.

You want to talk about a too-cozy relationship between the press and local politicos, try going into an endorsement meeting with the Times' publisher and a long-time political figure around here, when you're the challenger in the election. You'll start wondering if you smell funny, as the questions directed to you become more and more hostile, while the incumbent fields softball after softball.

Oh, and you want to talk about behind-the-scenes movers and shakers - take a look at the Alki Foundation sometime.
