I think Little Richard was bi--my evidence for this is a little weird but I remember him in an interview talking about how Buddy Holly was a voyeur and was into watching him do it with the ladies. Anyone got my back on this one? I know it sounds strange, but if the famous Spy article on Chuck Berry taught me anything, it's that the founders of rock had some serious kinks.

No, he just went to Ted Haggard's camp.

I'm pretty sure that Johnny Rotten married the mother of one of the Slits.

One of my favorite college memories was watching a group of conservative Who fanatics react to the news that Pete Townsend came out of the closet.

This doesn't prove he was gay, but it does prove he's a baby:

In We Got the Neutron Bomb by Brendan Mullen and Mark Spitz, they have a part talking about the Sex Pistols concert in San Francisco and how all the important kids from the LA punk scene (Darby Crash, Joan Jett) went up there to see them play. The week before, the Pistols spent time in LA. What did Sid do? Fuck Hellin Killer and do a bunch of dope. What did Johnny do? Hang out with his mother in his hotel room.

Eric F! I totally got your back on the Little Richard-watching-Buddy-Holly-bang-chicks story. (Though in my memory, it was a Rolling Stone story...)

It's my understanding that Little Richard is very much alive and lives in the penthouse of the Hyatt West Hollywood on Sunset in LA (the "Riot Hyatt"). I stayed there recently that's the rumor...

It's cool that there's more interest here in Little Richard than there is in Johnny Rotten. Weird. But cool.

Little Richard is more interesting than Johnny Rotten.

Eric F,
I thought it was one of the Everly brothers. But I do seem to remember the story. Or maybe I heard one of the Everly brothers say that Buddy Holly liked to watch them. Something similar anyway.

@12: No, you're totally right. Little Richard is a genuine freak, whereas John Lydon is just an asshole.

Johnny Rotten isn't gay, as far as anyone knows. What the hell are you talking about, Josh?

Johnny Rotten/Lydon gay??? He strikes me more as asexual.

Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks (same era) is gay, but I don't know about Johnny Rotten. As for Little Richard, why don't you ask him?

What planet have you been visiting, Josh? I think I figured out Little Richard was gay when I was about 12, back in the early 1970s. WooOOO!

little richard swears he isn't gay.. that he's a reverend and god don't approve of gay... but then again his official biography states that he slept with men..and use to think of men when he was having sex with women..i saw arsenio hall confront him about all of this on his show centuries ago.. richard even trotted out the 'adam and eve , not adam and steve' which he prolly heard donna summer say a few years previous.. this all to embarassed laughter from the studio audience. he handled all of the concversation in stride until arsenio asked him to name the woman he had told people he was seeing..while stumbling someone in the audeience yelles out 'james brown ! ' richard lost his composure and vehemently defended james..i belive they then cut to commercial and that was THAT

So, are you asking if he was gay but got over it, or do you think he died?

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lydon :

He is married to Nora Forster. They have no children together, but Lydon is "grandfather" to the children of Forster's daughter, Ari Up, who herself had been the lead singer in the influential all-female postpunk, dub reggae band, The Slits.

and bonus trivia:

His parents were both Irish Catholic immigrants, his father from Tuam, County Galway, and his mother from County Cork. He grew up on a council estate in Finsbury Park, North London with three younger brothers. At the age of seven, he contracted spinal meningitis, putting him in and out of comas for half a year and erasing most of his memory. The disease left him with a permanent curve in his spine. It also damaged his eyesight, resulting in the classic Lydon stare.[2]

Little Richard is like Bowie. He's gay only when he's fucking another guy.

Little Richard has been gay off and on for fifty years, unlike Bowie, who was only gay for ten minutes to promote an album. Little Richard's sexuality is like a light switch, with one position labeled "gay" and the other "Christian", and it flips back and forth depending on who he's talking to. I think the same light stays on either way, though.
